These female beings live on islands. With their irresistible and seductive singing they lure passing seamen. When seamen hear the singing, they immediately sail towards the island. Unfortunately, the seamen always became shipwrecked on their way. According to another myth, the seamen, who got under their spell at shore, stayed there listening until they eventually, languished and died. In this painting the artist shows the way of life thorough death. The horse symbolizes the power of life. The human figures increasingly become more transparent, ultimately ending in the spirit world.
