In medieval times, England's power rose because of a new and devastating long-range weapon - the Longbow. Responsible for destroying French armies at Crecy and Agincourt, it also brought about the demise of Scottish power. As castles were taken, they were destroyed to prevent future use as power bases. The longbow was made from "English yew" trees. This yew tree stands menacingly by the castle at Dirleton, perhaps as an unwitting reminder of what brought about the demise of many Scottish castles.
