A portrait of Malbert Pufendorf

Oil on canvas 53 x 69 cm. (The size does not include the frame) Mounted in a very heavy large wooden frame with gilt details to the inner section. This astonishing piece was a part of a small collection that surfaced during the making of a Danish TV series admitting common people to get their art valued by professional art dealers. A family from Jydekobing brought in some early 17th. century paintings, and amongst them this wonderful piece by Felix Fiigenschou. Although the canvas is suffering from some minor problems, the technical state of preservation is rather good considering the age of this artwork. The frame however, is now under conservation by The Norwegian State Gallery (www.statsgalleriet.no) and the scholars are currently having an argument over how many layers of over paint is to be removed from this large frame. The frame is probably secondary to the painting itself and arguably from the late 18th. or early 19th. century. Quite possibly a copy of the original frame. The later additions of paint includes a thick layer of light pink dating to the period during the teenage years of the daughter of the family that submitted the artwork for examination during the TV program. Sanne Martensen explains how she was inspired by her classmates to repaint the frame to match the interior of her bedroom back in the 1980's. The artwork was a gift from her grandfather, the former director of "De Jydske Frilandsamlinger", a local museum. Our experts are now removing these later layers to reveal the old colors and restore the original beauty of the frame. We regret to inform that this piece is no longer available for purchase.
