Walter began drawing at an early age and always considered a life in art. After a year in college in Texas, Walter moved to California and studied portrait and figure painting with Bob Gerbracht in San Jose, for two years. Thereafter he attended San Jose State University and studied with Maynard Stewart, who had been a student of Frank Vincent Dumond at the Art Students League of New York. Walter received a BA in Art from SJSU and was elected to the Golden Key Honour Society. Walter then moved to New York fulfilling his high school dream - to study at the Art Students League of New York. From 1988 to 2000 Walter studied at the League, primarily with Frank Mason, who had been a Dumond student himself and succeeded in his classes at the League. Walter has lived in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY since 1989.
