Do checkout my website https://www.sonalygandhi.com for more details About my figurative series: “Painting is another way of keeping a Diary” Pablo Picasso. A quote that has an influence on all my figurative paintings. The quick and easy availability of information at the click of a button has changed the way we live and also our relationships. The Diary of my life is filled with experiences of such evolving relationships between men and women, which I portray through my works. I am motivated to be in stride with the changing world, hence my primary subject is the contemporary woman who belongs to the present era. My figurative series of works manifest and exemplify the kind of financial as well as emotional freedom exercised by women, in the present times. My paintings bring forth the versatility of the modern-day women which is immensely powered by independence and self-attained equilibrium. Complete, flawless and self-sufficient in each aspect and challenge that life offers, my protagonist is free of any fetters that would hold her back from realising her true self. Through consistent simplification of the form, I have created a Universal, absolute figure that stands for and relates to all women regardless of their differences/peculiarities and diversities. The protagonists in my works surpass distinctions of all sorts and by doing so they unite and amalgamate all women as being ‘one’, connected through a common soul. Rendered in controlled and mature colour palette these strong, modern women in my paintings bare themselves completely and make no attempt to hide or shy away. I refrain from adding ornamental accessories and details, and this aspect of ambiguity accelerates the Universal appeal of the form. The women in some paintings willingly surrender to the boundless expanses of affection as well as in other works they cut themselves off emotionally from relationships that lack respect and freedom. Regardless of the kind of choice they make about relationships, they always excel in refraining themselves completely from pretending or agreeing to live a superficial life. I believe in equality of gender. Men and women are an important part of each other’s lives. However, it’s a known fact, across the globe, that women have been deprived of many of their rights and most importantly, their respect. I, being a woman, have always wanted to give women the importance they so deserve. Hence, they are highlighted and most prominent in my works. I use perfect symmetrical forms like squares, rectangles, checks and butterflies to cover the dignity of the female figure thereby symbolizing her flawlessness.

About my Automobiles Series I draw my muse from what Andy Warhol once said, “All things are beautiful, but not everyone knows how to recognize them.” The concept that there is no hierarchy of culture and that art may borrow from any source has been one of the most influential characteristics of Pop Art. Hence, I have combined the most beautiful and majestic Classic Cars and Bikes with bright and vibrant colors to turn them into Pop Art. The beauty of Classic Automobiles is evergreen. Every one of them is elegant and elite in their own ways. The creativity, uniqueness and aesthetics of each model have inspired me to treat them as a piece of art, which I have then translated to my canvas. My style is very fresh and has been profoundly appreciated, accepted and sold internationally. Working on the large canvases has been an exciting experience as it requires me to justify the space, balance the composition, maintain the colour scheme and use subtle texture appropriately. My color palette is mostly warm colours like shades of ochre, sienna, umber, crimson etc. Also, I use bright vibrant colors in my pop art works. I draw my inspiration from many artists of the past and the present. However three artists who have a great influence on me and my works are Picasso, Andy Warhol and Amrita Sher-Gil and Anjolie Ela Menon. I have always been impressed by their bold works, their out of box and revolutionary thinking and their courage and dedication to change the world of Art. Their attitude, approach and thought process have constantly inspired me and I am proud to be influenced by these known artists.
