Self Portrait

Ray Brotherton came to art relatively late in life. After a career roaming the world with the army, followed by a couple of spells working locally and in South East Asia, he studied for a Diploma in Fine Arts at Salisbury College..

His art is primarily inspired by his life-long love of early jazz. His aim is to capture this joyful, brash and exuberant music in free flowing, rhythmic colour. In more reflective moments he enjoys sketching and life drawing, which often forms the source of his colourful pastel paintings.

Originally from the Wirral, he now live on the outskirts of Salisbury, just a few minutes walk from Old Sarum. The city, its Cathedral Close and beautiful surrounding countryside are constant sources of inspiration.

Ray is a member of the "Six Artists" & "Sarum Artists" art groups and has exhibited with them in many venues in the Salisbury area. When not creating vivid works of art he plays the cornet in a local band.
