A painting of an old man for your review

The title of the painting is "Sangasin” which means “one who has given up all worldly goods”

This is a portrait on a gentleman I met while traveling in Nepal... Kathmandu to be exact.

I have painted the background in high relief using a pallet knife, which I felt best simulated the aged plaster that was evident at the temple. Then I switched to a very smooth style of painting to produce the figure and the cloth.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Great work. Theirs are cultures that are so complex it's hard to know where to even start. I like how the patches of orangey wall sort of dance around and go along with the orangey details on the man. That contrast between rough & smooth is working, too.

Thanks Gail.... I really had fun painting this picture. I think it's some of the best work I've done recently. I’ve kinda re-discovered the pallet knife....and it’s usages.

My yoga teacher who is from India... said he could be a holy man... or he could be an actor... doesn't really matter to me though. He fit my ideas ...
