New Multiple File Upload Feature

We have just activated a new feature in our members area to allow you to upload multiple images at one time. This is available for both free and Premium members of our site. We are still wrapping up the final touches and fixing a few bugs, so it's currently in 'beta' mode for everyone to try out. However, we wanted to make it live to start getting some feedback from our members.

This new upload feature includes:

  • Ability to upload multiple files in a single batch.
  • Better support for large files sizes.
  • Drag-n-drop file upload or standard 'browse files' method.
  • Displays a thumbnail of the image you are currently uploading.
  • Shows the total upload size, bytes transferred and progress bar.

We plan to keep the 'single file upload' around, we just wanted to add this 'multiple file upload' as a second option. We hope this makes it easier and faster for you to upload your portfolio images. Let us know what you think of it or if you encounter any little bugs we can fix.

    Upload progress bar...

    Bo Fransson 14 Jan 2006

Yes now I've tried it. I had to update my java though. It works just fine with f.e 3 at one time, but not 1+1+1. In the later case I just get a pending for the third picture. But it's a nice addition, I like it!

    BRAVO, AW!!!!!!!!!!

    Bo Fransson 15 Jan 2006

I only get 2 out of 5 to stay in pending mode!

    ArtWanted.com Staff 16 Jan 2006

Not sure what you mean Bo, please explain.

    Bo Fransson 16 Jan 2006

I drop 5 files in the box and only 2 or 3 shows up in the "pending image area" after upload. (I can see that they are uploading OK in the progress bar.)

Can you post the names of the files that are not being added to the pending area, so that we can look for them on our servers to see what might have happened to them.

Also, please try to upload just the three mising files again and see what happens and let us know, thanks.

    Bo Fransson 16 Jan 2006

Well it happened several times with different files when I was testing so I just don't remember the names. I uploaded them as single files after that. I just wanted you to know since you asked for feedback.

We would like to get some more feedback on this feature, so every try it out. It looks like things are working pretty good, but we don't want to take it out of 'beta' unless all the issues are fixed that you may be having. Try it out and let us know, thanks!

So far this is fantastic! I'm curious about how long they stay in the "holding pen" as it were. I haven't had any problems at all, except if I drop one on the upload box, then wait and drop another, it looks like only one of them will take. Whichever one uploaded first. Of course, I only tried that once, so it's probably not a completely accurate test. Still, this is totally nifty. I can upload stuff before I forget about it and then post it at my leisure later.

    Laurie Miller 17 Jan 2006

Just to clarify, I'm not complaining about any of these things. I think this is great, but you asked. I've tried 3 times now to drop another file while uploading one and the one that finishes first is the only one that takes. And that's cool, you might want to mention it in the instructions though. A lot of people think of "multiple file upload" as "I can drop however many I want in this box on at a time and they will all upload". Or maybe it's only me that's happening to? Also, I was having some issues with thumbnail creation with the single upload and was advised to try this. No dice, man. One of my files (valentine flower.bmp) doesn't have a thumbnail. And I noticed before that while I was uploading another bitmap, I didn't see the thumbnail on the progress bar, but it generated fine at the end anyway.

    Laurie Miller 17 Jan 2006

Me again, sorry. I'm not capable of reporting everything at once. If I use the browse and select multiple files, it works. Both upload. I also noticed that I had cancelled a couple of uploads in progress and I still have entries in my pending list for those.

Those 2 are "tornado of love.bmp" (stop laughing) and "more hearts in space.png"

I understand that you don't accept png images, but I wanted to see what happened if I tried one. And it let me upload it and even generated a thumbnail on the progress bar. Of course now I have an entry in the list with that "hey I can't find this image" symbol from my browser. Which I expected.

    Laurie Miller 17 Jan 2006

Huh. Valentine flower.bmp now has a thumbnail. Did you do that?

    Laurie Miller 17 Jan 2006

I just got some kind of a java socket error. I was uploading a bitmap, about 5.5mb, 1600 x 1200.

whilst i haven't yet tried this I just want to ask do I still upload my thumbnail separately or do i just drop a file in the beta; my reason for asking is that i put a copyright message on my thumbnails but my uploaded print-size files are clear. I wouldn't want to upload a clear thumbnail as these can easily be downloaded for printing, it least that is my experience. Regards Peter

AW REPLY: All you need to do in this case, is to upload two images. You will select one for your portfolio (with the copyright) and the other for the print program.

    Peter Beard 17 Jan 2006

I've just dropped an image of 16mb onto the beta upload and it appeared to upload fine but when I went to look at my images there was nothing there. Is the beta actually working or not please? if so, do i still have to upload the thumbnail prior to uploading the main image using the beta and how are they married up please.

    Peter Beard 17 Jan 2006

Where the problems with ArtWanted images have always occurred for me is not in putting up the thumbnail but the image for printing. Once the form for uploading is complete and the thumbnail submitted, with overwriting, then I go to the print upload button but on clicking it, there is no option to use the beta program. Please could you in considering beta amendments allow for this course of action. Thanks and regards Peter Joe Beard

AW REPLY: You will want to upload both images in the 'multiple file upload' first. Once this is done, you will click on the ADD IMAGE button to add the image to your portfolio. Then return to the multiple file upload page and select the print image and attach it to web image you just uploaded. You do not need to go to the 'print upload' page if you are using the multiple file upload process.

Does not work for me. Its downloads...but cannot get them onto page and shows as X

AW REPLY: It looks like your files had spaces in the names, which we hadn't accounted for. We will make some changes so that files with spaces and upload and generate the thumbnails, thanks for the feedback.

I dropped my 18 mb file into the frame and a new page came up with a huge picture on it and nothing else. Never saw any other directions other than drop or browse for image. No progress bar, no thumbnail. Using the regular upload still doesn't work, either. And there is nothing wrong with my image in any way, other than being a large file. The smaller files I did manage to upload after a dozen times, was not acceptive by quality control, even though they sold one. What does that mean?
