Who is the best online printing provider?

As we continue to look into the possibility of offering a new online printing service for our members, we would like to know which website(s) you have used in the past and who is the best service provider in your opinion.

We have a list of over 100+ online printing providers (ie SnapFish, Kodak Gallery, PhotoWorks, WinkFlash, etc.) and we want to know where you go to get prints of your artwork/photos. Tell us who you use and why, and you can also let us know which providers to avoid and why. Thanks!

I think it dpends what you're looking for and the sizes - I'd want a site with some expert knowledge and I suggest a proof at whatever size I would sell because every size will look differently.

I use Photocraft in Boulder - www.pcraft.com - they do Fuji Frontier and Lightjet 5900 printer and do an outstanding job.

They are not a tue net site but are one of the best labs in the country.

PC Magazine just did some consumer shopping for quality and price and they say Snapfish, Kodak came in second. They did a whole article on it and you can read it online, if you have time. It was in last month's issue.

I'm at work, otherwise I'd hunt down the link for you.

When I first started out I was on ofoto.com... right now for large prints above what my printer can do I go with Calypso http://www.calypsoinc.com/ they sofar haven't disapointed me... colors are rich and to my liking.

They have a online thing. You would need to contact them to see if the can meet what you want... I am sure they would take any business they can.

I don't know if this will help but I get my giclee's made at Herron Art School here in Indy.

As far as on-line printing I have only dealt with CafePress and they did a decent job.

I was surprised with the high quality of prints you can get at Kinko's (http://www.fedex.com/us/officeprint/main/) at the very low price. The paper and color reproduction are perfect (sometimes.) I used to print 11" by 17" color drawings on 80# paper for International contests and exhibitions.

One big NO: this quality is not consistant, it is changing from office to office, from machine to machine, and even on the same printer you can get different results. So I would prefer to order it personally, not through the web. Then I will be able to control quality.

The fact is that any GOOD printer will make a print that looks almost exactly like the source file. The catch there is having calibated screens, both the Artist and the printer so that what you see is what they see. In fine Art reproductions I think they have a copy that they are to match.

I am doing promo prints (4x6) from the local Walmart since they only ask .19 each for one hour pick-up. The images do come out darker than when I print them and only are offered in Matte finish but the quality is good and the price far cheaper then I can print myself. I dislike that they don't state that their process is only for RGB images.... I sent a JPG saved in CMYK mode and it came out with too much Magenta and Cyan.

www.zazzle.com

they rock. I've made posters through them in the past BUT they also sell posters from their site as well, so that might not work. Maybe you can work something out with them. Good luck and I look forward to this new AW idea.

Have not used a print service myself. However, West Coast Printing has always been mentioned whenever this subject comes up.

Nina Kuriloff 28 Jun 2005

AW, Are you interested in a service that provides archival prints?

:)

Why not look for Giclee Techs around the country and source the jobs to them? This should help with distribution and if they are licensed to handle prints they might supply to galleries in their area.

For the buyer, this could be a real treat to be able to go pick up their item close by.

Why I think of this is a strange event I had happen recently. I had to fill an order for a print, the client suggest an online printer. I followed their suggestion, but only to find out within a few hours that a print could have been made less than 2 miles from the client's office. They had looked online the same as any trusting soul and had then to wait 5 days to have the print shipped.

The quality was good, but the timing was poor.
