Incidental Landscape

I LOVE it when this happens...finding an "incidental landscape" in another painting. Interesting to find another world in a piece you are working on.

I was painting a llama portrait for a breeder in Wisconsin, and turned the canvas sideways when I was moving things in my studio. I noticed this beautiful little place...reminded me of past trips out west and the color at sunset on the amazing rock formations.

I call this "The Canyons".

Believe it or not, I found it in THIS 18" x 24" painting! I'm just doing the underpainting on this. The background is going to remain rather soft and impressionistic. The unpainted area in the background is going to be a distant view of the same llama, Poco.

I know it looks kind of odd right now, just wanted you to see where the other piece came from. ;)

Alot of times over the years I have taken paintings that I wasn't happy with and cut them into smaller compositions. It is amazing how many tiny paintings you can cut from a 16'x20". I figure when I get 100 or so I will do a "Miniature" exhibit.

Thanks for the comments - that area of the painting is only about 2" wide! LOL

I think I'm going to try to recreate it on a large scale. That art duel with Hinsel really loosened me up to do my underpaintings fast and gestural.

Very cool idea Gordon, having a showing of minis! I have been collecting pictures from magazines of small versions of my favorite masterpieces. I have them matted in very small, elegant frames, and am creating a mini gallery of these pieces in one small area of my studio. Makes for great inspiration to view these little treasures.
