Question about copyright

I am asked to design a cd cover... I will be given credit for the image, but how does the copyright work? Do I keep copyright over the image?

Inge...I just visited your portfolio - absolutely stunning pieces you've done with watercolor.

Please visit this thread, which will give you some ideas regarding where to find copyright and licensing information...

You can sell the record company (or band if the CD is self-produced) a "one-time use" agreement for them to use the image only on CD covers. If they decide to do t-shirts, posters for sale, then put together a contract for a licensing agreement for a percentage of the wholesale of each item. OR, you can sell the image outright to them, with you retaining some reproduction rights. Or you sell it all to them, and the image is no longer yours in any manner, except as a past client piece in your 'folio. Just a few examples of the variations on contract negotiations regarding a CD cover.

There are so many different ways you can go - you have to work out an agreement with your client. BE SURE to have a lawyer look over any paperwork that you may be signing. Have them explain it to you, even if you THINK you know what it means.

I highly suggest the book mentioned in the other thread.

Good luck...
