Do we NEED "Top Tens" ?

My message kinda got lost in the shuffle of the replies for Sher's topic on ratings... but I'm interested in what people (and AW) think.

Do we really NEED to have a "Top Ten" section on this site? It seems the reason that we are all arguing about the rating system comes down to one thing - people want to be in the Top Ten. Whether it be a 1 or a 3 or an 8 vote, it takes them out of that list. It's sad when an artist can't accept an 8 or 9 vote on their work. What's wrong with an 8 or 9? It's still a GREAT vote - someone really liked your work to give you that 8 or 9.

The concept of the Top Tens (to me) is a little ridiculous. It seems that they are sometimes (not always, of course) a popularity contest, not necessarly an *artwork* contest. I've seen lots of art from NON-Top Ten members that is WAY better than some of the art that made the list. And why is that? Because people gave this poor person honest scores - a 9, because it was really good... 10 is defined as "perfect" - and is there such thing?

So, I'd love to hear some replies... what does everyone think about the Top Tens? Am I way out in left field here? :)

Art shows are sometimes, but not always ....a popularity contest. Sometimes...you know who is going to be the "belle of the ball" before the thing gets going. This is a nice hazard free environment to get accustomed to it. It will happen again, and maybe then it will effect your chosen career. It is human nature...think about it...it isn't just here. People have a need for a better or worse...or best...of everything. In a way it is good, it promotes (hopefully) good natured competition...which is a catalyst for growth. Whats so bad about that? Nothing......unless you can't stand to be #2 or 3 or 4....and you need to be #1. Why else would someone get upset about getting rated an 8? Because they know they will not be attending the awards dinner with that rating.

That's my point - I have 10's, 9's, and 8's in my portfolio, and I APPRECIATE THEM. I'm not concerned about getting into the Top Ten, because I am comfortable about my talent and my art. Yes, I enter contests and competitions, and no, I don't always win. But I think the Top Ten's *here* are not promoting healthy, good natured competition... they're causing people to be greedy, malicious, and it makes people think that a 9 vote is bad. Which is insane... a 9 is GREAT! :)

Good idea... change the labels of the rating system. NO ONE IS PERFECT! 10-excelence, NOT perfection.

However... getting rid of numbers 1-5 - NOT A GOOD IDEA and AW will NEVER do it. All of a sudden that makes 6 the worst number, and we'll have the same issue all over again, people crying out in despair when they get a 6...

1-5 is needed, but really, with the skip button, no one should have to use them. I'll repeat an idea from a previous thread - 1-5 votes should only be allowed if the person has a 40 word or more CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM of the work. A reason for their vote. And even then, the 1-5 votes should remain hidden from public, unless the artist opts to reveal them. Those votes should only be for the artist's own use, to hopefully help improve their work.

Hello Christina...

The site really is great in all its features..and the option to participate or not, etcetc.. The top10 for all its bit of grief, gives alot of traffic and people commenting, which is good for AW.. I think i've mentioned that during a period when there was no top10 it was rather quiet. You could comment only...once they started up the top10 and ratings again, WHAM! it was like a party and people swarmed in : )

Everything offered here is a good thing, it just needs a tweeking here and there.. so all suggestions and conversing on options or possible updates are good things..

If anyone doesnt like the ratings, you have the option to turn them off..... So whatever needs anyone has, there are choices..and thats good.. choices allow us to meet the needs of our personal artistic desires on the site.

There may be an addiction to 10's...and i too see fantastic works with little or no recognition -and boyoboy its like i find treasure when that occurs...! So in that respect i agree with you...

It takes a village to change the village though : )

The thing is... most of us LIKE the ratings. We don't want to turn them off. And that really has nothing to do with trying to get into the top ten, it's just that we like to know how people would rate our work.

Is it possible to rearrange the way Top Ten's are calculated? (seeing as it's obvious people don't want to get rid of them...) Could we find a way to include 9's and 8's... make it an overall rating, rather than JUST a 10's thing? What about factoring in the times an image has been viewed? Or the number of times a portfolio has been viewed? Personally, I still think that we could do away with the Top Tens, but if we do keep them, some thought should be given to how they are calculated...

Christina, if your are way out in left field, then so am I. What say we have a picnic? I dont think we need the Top Tens. I dont think we need a rating system either, but I think its interesting, and I also appreciate the 8,9,10 ratings, and even the lower ones if they come with a helpful comment, which they usually do. I have gotten my share of lowballs also, but OH well! Big Deal! That'l happen. Anyway ,yeah the TopTens are pretty lame, there are so many catagories, it should be something more like the TopOneHundred.

Christina... yes i think some have suggested just adding up the numbers as what they are as a total... so someone with 5 10's wouldnt beat out someone with 2 10's and 20 9's for an example, theyd just be added together... : )

But i tend to agree with AW that using most all the numbers and just not 10's is the magic answer...

More food for thought : )

Christina Toews 01 Feb 2005

I love the idea of adding the numbers up... it's a great plan. It's very true that a picture with 2 10's and 20 9's should place higher than one with only 5 10's...

Really, it's just a matter of showing that all of us care enough about these topics to talk about them on the message boards. AW will get the idea. :) Thanks everyone, keep up the great replies!

You don't need to use 40 words to tell someone their picture is out of focus, or their cloning borders juvenile, or that their perspective of a building they painted is way off, or what happened to the 4th wheel on that wagon, or that your balance is way off on that abstract..etc.....

Now how many words did I just use, to cover a wide band of mediums?

We wanted to pipe in, but there is really nothing that we can say that we have not said before. When we turned off the 'top tens' people went bezerk until we turned them back on. Ratings & top tens charts are here to stay, there are too many people that like them. However, we will continue to tweak the system to make more and more people happy. Keep the comments coming.
