Think, before you hit SEND

Although most of the comments & emails are very positive on our website, we are seeing a trend that we do not like. In the last week, we have had a half dozen people quit ArtWanted.com and want their accounts completely removed. In every case, this was due to very rude comments they received on an image or via e-mail. All of these comments were made from different people. This is getting out of hand and has to stop.

Before you comment on someone's portfolio or send them an e-mail, think before you hit the send button. Are you being positive and offering constructive criticism or are you just ripping on the person? If you are using profanity or insulting the person to get your point across, then you can bet your comments are not constructive.

Because of this issue, we are now being forced to moderate the comments and e-mails that are sent out. It's hurting our business and we will not continue to tolerate it as we have in the past. If we see an e-mail or comment that we feel was strictly meant to insult, then you risk your ArtWanted.com membership by sending it. Very few warnings will be given before accounts are locked or deleted, due to insulting messages being sent.

Another thing we have told our members NOT to do, is e-mail people asking why they gave a certain rating. If that person wanted to say why, they would have said it in the original image comment. You are only going to upset that person if you e-mail them for an explanation, no matter how good your intentions are. Don't do it.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET AN INSULTING COMMENT/EMAIL?

The first thing you should do is send it to us for review. Don't reply, don't respond, just send it to us. Otherwise, you will be fueling the fire and making the situation worse. You may even become part of the problem and get your account banned at the same time. Let us deal with the issue so that you stay the victim. You can always delete any comment from your members area that you don't like.

Please just think more before you send or reply to comments and examine your intention of responding. Play nice, and let's all try and get along better. Thanks!

Funny that my advice to others..when such a topic is raised..shame this has gone soo far...

ghada zoughby 05 Feb 2005

Everyone who won't accept low ratings or critical comments disable ratings from his member area...and once he allows others to rate, he must accept critique and all ratings...why 1.......5 points exist in the rating system? to avoid hitting them like a crime?!

all of us must understand that all people are not similar, there are few jalous members who's trying to make troubles in this site,if you're not one of them, all you have to do is to avoid them and treat their comments as NOTHING! because nothing is worst than replying to a bad person, this will makeyou both equal!

Greg Summers 07 Feb 2005

Andy all you have to do is look at the photosig experience - the rating system and the bikering took the site down - and yet, the rating system pumped it up.

Try any solution you think might work but it is the medium that is the problem. Keeping score will always bring out the worst in people as their are no clear cut boundaries.

I suggest you set clear boundaries for those few who create the problems. As I've said in another post - 3 strikes - you're out. Make part of the enrollment in the site copy and pasting the statement into the enrollemnt form and make it for bothe free and paying memberships and with no refunds for those who act out.

The hooligans create an environement that doesn't feel safe for many people. So few can do so much to so many.

AW, if you are moderating emails, perhaps so that the newer members can be made aware of this, you could post a line above the email form that says:

"Before you hit SEND...be aware that ANY communications sent through the AW mail system are viewed and moderated by AW staff - if you don't want someone else to read it - maybe you shouldn't write it".

I am sure that NOT everyone is aware that their email sent through AW is NOT private, and the warning could also stop some of the nasty mail being sent.

joan warburton 08 Feb 2005

I think that's a great idea, Dawn. There should be a line at the top of the AW email page.

Dawn Schmidt 08 Feb 2005

A lot of folks NEVER even read these boards, so they will never see this post, especially a number of trouble makers out there...thus my thought for the warning on the Email form page.

I think it makes perfect sense...AW, are you listening?

Dawn Schmidt 09 Feb 2005

*taps microphone*

Is this thing on? ;) AW: Hate the suggestion or like it? Thoughts? Comments? Rebuttals?

ArtWanted.com Staff 10 Feb 2005

Good suggestion, we can probably add this in our next round of updates to the site. Thanks.

Dawn Schmidt 10 Feb 2005

I was speaking tongue-in-cheek when posting "Before you hit SEND...be aware that ANY communications sent through the AW mail system are viewed and moderated by AW staff - if you don't want someone else to read it - maybe you shouldn't write it".

Isn't it ILLEGAL to read mail that is NOT intended for you???

You might want to check into the legality of reading , excuse me, "moderating" private mail.

I prefer that my communications with my peers to remain just that...MY communication with my peers. I have not sent any threatening email to anyone ever, so why would AW have "due cause" to read my mail? If AW makes it a policy to open and read my mail before I send it, then I am seriously going to rethink my membership here.

Dawn Dawn Dawn...

...you just don't get it do you..? We are the 'lil chillrens'...We are to not look at nudity(even though nothing shows) ::tsktsk:: and they need to read all our mail to make sure our mouths don't need soap or in case we eat the apple and think tooo much...and buy buy spend spend and followfollow..................

...::sticks thumbie back in mouth and says "are we there yet?"...:::

::thinks...uhoh i bet i get grounded for this one::...

...............sorry i'm in a weird mood : )

Dawn Schmidt 12 Feb 2005

Just wondering if AW has checked into the legality of reading our private email yet.

I know that employers have the right to scope out employee mail...but once again...I really prefer my private communications to remain as such. I have done tarot/rune readings and discussed sensitive personal matters with a number of people here, and I don't think that THEY want to share their personal lives with AW's eyes.

I would like to know whether you are really doing this or not, AW.

Until I have an answer to this question, any members here who wish to email me in the future, please go to my website, www.eclecticdawnarts.com, and email me directly from there.

AW, please remove the live link on my portfolio page where people can email me directly through you.

Dawn Schmidt 16 Feb 2005

zzzzzzzz...Still waiting for you, AW, to remove your "email the artist" link from my page...I would prefer to have people email me directly. Thank you.

ArtWanted.com Staff 16 Feb 2005

Dawn -

We currenly don't have a function on our site to 'hide' the 'email the artist', unless you don't have an e-mail address on your account. We can remove your e-mail address if you wish, but you would not get any e-mail on artwatch, image comments or anything else. Please confirm that you want us to do this.

While we are on the subject, we also want everyone to know that e-mail is the most unsecure way of sending things over the Internet. Any time you send an e-mail from Outlook (or your e-mail program), it can be read by dozens if not hundreds of people before it ever gets to your destination. All of your e-mail that you send and receive can be read by your ISP tech department at any time as well as anyone along the chain of internet connections. All of your e-mail is stored in simple text files on the computers/servers of your ISP, which makes it very easy to read. Just a word of warning, never put credit cards or social security numbers or other important things in e-mails that you send.

Dawn Schmidt 19 Feb 2005

Thanks for responding, AW - much appreciated. As far as your answer regarding the email link on our portfolios, I will leave it as is...

But you STILL haven't answered my original question. ARE you reading our mail?

I am VERY aware of the fact that email is NOT a secure method of communication. I did not ask about how secure our mail is in cyberspace, I asked if you are checking up on us like "big brother", without proper and legal notification to us on the form page that is filled out to send email through AW.

My concern was whether or not YOU are in fact purposely reading our emails, as you stated earlier in the thread.

Your statement: "Because of this issue, we are now being forced to moderate the comments and e-mails that are sent out...If we see an e-mail or comment that we feel was strictly meant to insult, then ..."

I would truly appreciate an answer regarding this question. With Respect...Thank you.

ArtWanted.com Staff 19 Feb 2005

Naturally, we don't have time to read every e-mail that is sent out, nor do we want to.

However, we do scan the e-mails from time to time to see if there is anyone that is offending people without cause. You wouldn't believe some of the e-mail we find of people 'going off' on other members because they didn't like their comment or rating they were given. There is a lot of anger on the site from many members that can't take criticism or even a complement.

Hope that answers your question. If not, please let us know what you are looking for.

Dawn Schmidt 19 Feb 2005

That answers it, thanks.

Perhaps it is still a good idea to post the fact that the mail "may be read by AW staff" on the email form so that folks will think twice before sending inflammatory mail.

ArtWanted.com Staff 19 Feb 2005

Thanks, we have added the note to the e-mail page.
