Just being recently new to the board, I commend your diligent efforts to appease a wide range of appetites...so to speak.

Keep up the great work!

Dear AW

I love this place and I think what you have here is Great, But I am a bit concerned with all the Rumors running around this Place! I for one think that you all are trying to fight a battle that will never be won. There are way to many different artists with different Opinions about ART. I think we should all as Members Of AW and Artists STOP! We are all being too critical of a great website and Oppertunity to share and Grow as Artists. I have not had a problem with low ball ratings and I hope to never have that problem, BUT I will say that If some one did low ball me ..... SO WHAT! If they want to be so imature and Mean to do it for no GOOD Reason Than shame on them but I am here for Fun and Fellowship with Other talented People that Love art Like myself! Every Diamond has a flaw and Unfortunately there are fellow artists and others that are either to critical or jelous of some artists on here. That is sad, but If we all follow a simple way of thinking that if you don't have anything nice to say... say nothing at all! I Only Rate and Comment on art that I feel I can say something constructive or Positive to say about it. If I do rate a 10 its not because I know the person or Want a 10 back on my Portfolio! I rate a 10 when I really enjoy, love, or appreciate that piece of art. It is very sad to me that we all can't be fair and nice and treat everyone with the same respect that we all desire to receive! I welcome the Changes because there are alot of artists That I admire and Have on my artwatch that are very upset and Hurt by the Turmoil that has exploded the past 3 months I have been here. BUT I have to say that if any of us get low ball scores we should think of what makes that person do such a thing...if they are just being rude, hateful or vindictive.... IGNORE THEM! They are looking for a respose and the more we react the more they are gonna prey on that Anger!

Well, thats my two cents and then some... but I love this place and the artists that are part of this Gallery are ALL TALENTED! We should all relax and try to enjoy the Friendships we have built here and HAVE FUN!

Thank you AW for taking action, Christine Calderon

Very well put Christine .If you go to artist search then click on view comments you can go back and see all the ratings and comments and if you study the comments you will see a pattern. People with fake names are making sure that the top ten is not going to go to certain artists and if they do give a 10 it is to a piece that is 2 weeks old .one says there from NZ but when I check there IP address they are from the states with 4 or 5 mailing IP's under different names .It took me till I was in my 40's before I felt I could say I was an artist so when I see someone giving tens out like candy to something that looks like a 7 grade kid drew then going to a beautiful work of art and saying not bad and giving a 7 or 8 it makes me upset there is a group from deviant art I watched chat and they think it is great fun .I have spent many a sleepless night studying my work just to put one line in it but to see masterpieces treated like they are nothing is very sad .A true artist would never treat someone's work with such disrespect because they now what the artist really went through to create there piece

I read all that very carefully and agree that you are going to make a lot of excellent changes. I particularly like the idea of being able to reply to a comment in a message type response. At times its good to reply to something asked about the painting. Well done and Thanks for explaining it all so carefully. Maggi

David,

well, I think overall is good, though some parts I don't like. Anyway can't help it and it's not so important. You got to try to do something more popular and anyway rating is always a subjective matter!

I think that the changes seem like they will be good ones. People will actually rate how they really feel instead of giving a "friendly" rating. I haven't done much on here because the ratings aren't really true. I want constructive feedback to learn and grow. People are just wanting to hear that they are wonderful and everything they do is perfection. If they aren't getting all 10's then they get bent out of shape.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to see these changes implemented and to see if it makes this site more credible. Thanks for your efforts to make this site better!

youre proposed system sounds like a solution to meet the majority of artwanted.com's populations needs. I have a question. 'what is "lowballing"? Is that conscienously giving a low rating? Were that people getting upset because a particulare image was rated lower than a 9? Does this mean that if the art is thought to be an 8 or less in the viewer's eye, because of technical structuring of the image, we should just not comment? Is that the preferred method currently? that if you think the art was not overall produced well technically that skipping a rating is best? I just want to get this right, as I am new and would hate to anger someone over my critique of thier art.

MaryLou Chaney 22 Mar 2005

oh, maybe we can put in a spell checker for lazy spellers like my self (hehehehe) *Consciously. Geeezzzzz

Meredith Dillman 22 Mar 2005

The simplest thing to do would have been either to remove names on rating or to just show comments and an average of the ratings instead of next to each name.

Thank you AW for taking steps to rectify a situation that was beginning to create such a fear of retribution that I had gotten to the point of being afraid to rate anyone's work. When I first joined AW I felt it was such a supportive and loving enviroment. I've even had thoughts of leaving because of increasing hostility among members. I'm so glad that I can continue to consider this my artwork homepage.

I like the idea of having the art rated separately from the comments. I've always tried to critique the art I see as objectively and honestly as I can. But I discovered that some artists didn't like it if I gave them less than a perfect 10. This will probably solve a lot of problems and get the voting back to being realistic as it should be.

Daniel Romano 23 Mar 2005

I think the rating system to date has been sort of warped. A 10 rating is something that is perfect, no visible flaws that draw the eye or just doesn't seem to fit, detracts from the overall quality or cheapens the aura so to speak..."No one" could find a flaw. Considering a scale down to number 1, 8 is an acceptable prize, indicating the piece isn't perfect but close enough most viewers may not notice the imperfection(s). 5 is average, representing half of the public doesn't like it, but chances are it wouldn't MOVE half of the public anyway.

I think the rating system would have worked, if everyone truly judged by the scale. I agree that the name with the vote is/was a bad idea. It seems mean to give a average rating to someones passion, besides no one wants bad grades, it is a bum. But it would be easier to be truthful by remaining anonymous!!

Do we want the truth to learn and refine our talents???

Thank You AW for all the time and hours reading the artists views as well as shape and molding a program for us all. I know there will be a few who won't like some things-thats to be expected=nothing is perfect-not even art-well thats my wiew.I am looking forward to all the new changes and most of us will adjust.Thank you very much for trying to please us all and making your site-our site--K p.s. there will be those who will pick holes in this comment..to be continued:

I am pleased with what I'm reading.. I have felt sad for those who have been hurt in the past and wish you well with your huge task at hand....

Betty Schwartz 15 Apr 2005

I am glad to hear that comments and ratings are to be separated. I have long wished to offer honest critiques without being vilified. So many of us do not understand the rule of elipses, for example. A short explanation could help so many to improve so much! I have offered this lesson to some as email, but that deprives others from learning!
