Website Down Time

Over the last few weeks, our IT staff has been going over every inch of our web servers to locate the reasons for the random down time. We have found several issues that are causing these problems and we have done some things to greatly reduce the 'down time' in the last week. We will continue to work hard to always improve our server performance - it is out top priority.

This being said, there is still a major server component that is to blame for the random down time that has not been fixed. We are referring to the need for a new database server, due to the huge amounts of traffic/hits our website receives. Only one 'small' problem...it will cost about $20,000 for the hardware and software to purchase this new database server.

For those that want to know, here is a little info about our IT structure... ArtWanted.com owns and manages all of our own equipment. We do not rent or share servers with other companies, so we are not effected by things outside of our control. We only purchase high-end equipment to run our websites and all of our servers are less than one year old. Our Internet 'pipe' is burstable to over 25 times the current traffic we get now, so bandwidth will never be an issue. We simply pay for what we use. We have onsite and offside monitoring that alerts us when our site is down or there is a potential problem. In almost all cases, we are well aware of any server problems and working on them before our members notice them. We feel very strongly that we should never cut corners when it comes to server hardware.

Despite our website going down from time to time recently, we have still averaged over 98% up time in the last few weeks. Which means for every 100 minutes, ArtWanted.com is down less than two minutes. If you get a 'timeout request' or 'gateway timeout' error, this is usually resolved in less than a minute and you can be back to surfing our site. The longer periods of down time are usually at night when our staff is not accessing the site, so it may take a bit longer to restore the website. However, most potential clients or artists that surf our site occasionally will not notice a problem getting to what they need.

In order to purchase the needed equipment and increase our site up time, we need to raise a bunch of money from the sale of our products and services. We are asking for your support to reach this goal.

Currently, only 5% of our members (1 out of every 20) are paying Premium Members. Our premium membership contains a dozen extra features and we feel the price is very reasonable for the upgrades that are included. We would hate to fill our site with flashing banners, raise our prices or cut off free members, so we hope that we can raise the money needed by having more free members upgrade their accounts. Even if you don't need any of the additional upgrades that are included in the Premium Membership, if you like ArtWanted.com then we are asking for your support.

There are also other ways to support our site. This can be done by purchasing our products (ArtWanted.com Book or Calendar) or by purchasing artwork from other members of the site. You can even purchase a premium membership for another person on our donation page. If you are flat broke and don't have a cent to spare, we also understand. You can support the site by telling more people about ArtWanted.com that may have the funds for some of our products/services.

In conclusion, we do want to thank all the current Premium Members of our site and everyone else that has helped make ArtWanted.com what it is today. We have hundreds of new members join every month, and we know that this is from many of you spreading the word about our site. Our traffic and membeship grows by huge amounts every single month and we know that our current members are the reason of this large growth.

Having our website up and available for you and potential clients is our top priority. We will continue to work on increasing our website 'up time' with the equipment we have and hope that we will be able to purchase this new equipment very soon.

Thank you for explaining the problem. It has been much better this past week and when it does go down it's been only for a few minutes as opposed to several hours.

Thanks AW. You can start by taking my last two payments out of my credit card. I see you haven't retreived February or March. I know that doesn't help that much but sounds like every cent counts. I WILL be re-newing my account. I still say ArtWanted is the best art site, bar none.--Denny ;{

Well, I'm already paying for an account for a friend, and a premium member, and have the book and a calendar....so I'll just donate a few bucks here and there using the donate button, okay? =)

I have been and will continue to mention this site to artist that I meet; I have mentioned it to the Art Gallery in my area that shows most of the local artist in a large area here in Minnesota.

When I can afford to become a premium member I will right now have to many medical bills at this time...sigh...

Thanks for a great art site...

Better late than never. This is communication. Only lacks a remitters name.

I'm on one year prem. and I grant you the lost time for the last weeks so .. I think I'm doing my part. As I previously have explained to you I am in the position to have a number of artists from my country to join but very few are interested when they here about your censorship policy. Too bad but that's how it is.

Jane McIlroy 14 Mar 2006

Thanks for the explanation, AW. I haven't noticed very much downtime over here (maybe I've been lucky!), but I appreciate your difficulties. This is a great site, and I intend to keep renewing my premium membership for as long as I can afford it, so keep up the good work!

Jude 14 Mar 2006

Oh yeah I forgot to mention It will be couple of months, as soon as I can I will join as a premium member.

thanks for the information, its good to know whats happening. I have had some problems, about 3 times a week, yesterday was the longest but as soon as i emailed to tell you it came back up. i had an idea about the fund raising program. i at times work in book format usually handmade to date but I would like to make a series of books about particular subjects and try to market them here and abroad. Also I would like to make work for a local calendar which I know would sell in local stores. Essentially it would be the production and reproduction of artist books, could you develope a service like this? Also I would be happy to place orders for my cards and art cards and business cards if this service was available and competitively priced, what does everyone else think?

Nelly van Nieuwenhuijzen 14 Mar 2006

Thank you so much for the explanation, AW!! I 'll try to be patient when there are problems again.

Emily Reed 14 Mar 2006

Thank you ArtWanted for letting us "techies" know what is going on. I think people can tolerate things going wrong much better when they have knowledge of what the problems are rather than being in the dark. Your detailed explanation and apologies do help to create a better atmosphere among your members.

Artwanted has been a great resource for me and my work, the least I can do is return the favor by upgrading my account. Thanks!

I too am glad because I thought it was at my end ie java not programed right etc. I would mention that as it is possible still to get images free by right-clicking on the image, if this loophole was removed by code, then more prints might be sold as taking a screenshot only produces a small print. I realise that you scale thumbnails to as I understand it 600kb but most image sales stock catalogues seem to reduce their images to approx 30kb or thereabouts and thus any picture copied, tends to pixellate if put into a graphics package for printing. By reducing ways of visitors possibly thinking about doing this, and I have done this with my own image just to check, it would as I say hopefully increase print sales.

I also suggest you might consider giving free members only 1 image upload instead of 3 which again might encourage more to sign on to what is a very inexpensive fee considering the helpfullness and advantages of your site for premium members.

I hope these suggestions are of use, and thank you for all you do for premium members

Peter Beard 14 Mar 2006

Another thought; Microsoft word has a way of putting in a 'watermark' which is the same colour as the background and can bear a message; many print stock companies also do this; perhaps if AW were to do this with all images' thumbnails eg an embossed ArtWanted.com within, then they would not be so good to download for free and again this might enhance print sales. Just a thought which I hope helps Regards Peter
