New Category Suggestions

As some of you have read, we are making some changes to the way ArtWanted.com categorizes art on our site in March. This decision was made to make things easier for artists to find a category for their art, help buyers find artwork they want to purchase, but also add some additional sub-categories to our site for further define the type of art on our site.

As it stands now, we have 9 main 'galleries' that you can put your art in. However, there is a lot of artwork that can go into multiple galleries. For example, if you draw a picture of Spider-man, the image could go into the 'Art/Drawing', 'Cartoon/Comic' or the 'Illustration' gallery. We have also noticed that there is a lot of artwork that is put in the wrong category, so we will make it easier to put your artwork in the right category with some changes we are doing.

First, we will have 4 main galleries of art, instead of the 9 we have now. All artwork on our site, should fit into one of these four main categories. These will be:

  • Traditional Art - Created with pens, pencils, paint, chalk, etc.
  • Digital Artwork - All artwork created on a computer.
  • Photography - Photographs taken by the member.
  • Sculpture/Functional Art - Sculptures, funtional art, crafts, etc.

Second, we currently have a 'media' category for all the traditional art, but there has not been a way to sub-categorize digital artwork or photography. With our changes in March, we want to add some additional sub-categories for the new digital, photography & sculpture galleries we will have.

Before we allow everyone to start re-categorizing their artwork, we want to get some suggestions from our members on new sub-categories for the following areas:

  • Digital Artwork
  • Photography
  • Sculpture/Functional Art

We plan to keep the 'subject' category, so you can specify 'what' the artwork is about, but we want some additional categories for these new galleries. For example, the photography section can be broken down into black & white photos, photo collages and other sub-categories.

It's a difficult task to categorize all artwork in the world into groups for a website, but we think these changes are a step in the right direction.

Please use this thread to post your suggestions. We will review them and add the sub-categories to our site for our March website updates.

I think there should definitely be a "photo manipulation" sub category. Probably in the photography area rather than in digital art.

Can we have seperate oil and acrylic painting categories?

Hope you will no longer have your so-called Top 10, which is a game as you well know, "I do you and you do me". Have a Top 10 for each category.

In the digital art group I would like to see all of the traditional forms such as sketch, oil, watercolor, etc..

I would like to see Surreal added as a sub-category in Digital and Traditonal.

I am assuming that this will be done after all deadwood accounts have been culled. Since that should be a higher priority than naming conventions and slots to put work.

I like the new 4 categories very much and it has been long overdue.

    Digital Artwork:

3D Modelling, 3D Renders, Digital Painting, Fractals, Realism, Surrealism, Fantasy, Horror, SciFi, Landscapes/Worlds

It would be nice if there was a way we could put up our artwork, and not worry about it being covered over by a million and one others within 10 minutes. Combining the digital art galleries leaves even less of a chance for exposure. Universal sub-catagories MUST exist for all. Otherwise no one will ever get their work seen. I have a hard enough time getting my artwork seen on this site because there is 10,265 pics there to be seen, and we have a few that uploads 10-15 pics a day sometimes. For instance, by seperating the "Digital Art" catagory into sections much like it is now, 3D rendering/Fractals/Digital Painting, etc. That gives us more of an edge to get our work seen. Don't put different dogs into the same cage. I've gotten plenty of exposure on this site, and I want that to continue.

Has the glass work and/or stained glass/glass fusion been dropped?? I know few artists here who does that medium....???

    BySilent 13 Feb 2007

And where would Fiber Artists go? Sculpture/Functional Art....

The reorganization should not be rushed since there are many that do work that would not fit neatly into the 4 categories or at them moment they don't seem to fit.

Will that mean the Top Ten will be scrapped or altered in some manner or will it stay status quo?

So many good artists deserve recognition but have lives or are actually doing the business of Art that they do not have the "free" hours to build an "old" boy (or is it person to be PC or will that insult senior citizens) network so this will consoladate them into a smaller group?

Or keep the Top Ten as is but add a more difficult award to attain... That would be selected by a panel of AW staff/moderators that will be given out weekly for the best work of the week... Just an idea but something that would be less prone to manipulations. That way there is an award that all members can earn based on their work.

Could we please have a sub-categorization by style instead than by medium in Traditional art? I mean a manga comic is drawn in pen or pencil so unless it is digitally colored should go into traditional art. Still there is quite a difference between that and an impressionistic landscape.

    Dear Art Wanted,

I believe Designers aka graphic designers aka graphic artists need their own category. We cannot be clumped with digital art, as it now stands nor is it fine art, nor is it any other category that you have listed.

    Thanks Dan

I'm thinking that maybe clumping sculpture and functional art together (other than pottery), is too general a category. I'm considering the hand painted denim i do, and the fabric nira designs, and so on. Maybe a textile, or wearable art category.

Hello, I work with a graphics tablet on my computer and use it to create paintings ....... drawn and painted from scratch on my computer (NO manipulations OR jiggerypokery! whatsoever) Could you provide a category for that PLEASE?

    Lynda Lehmann 14 Feb 2007

    Hi Staff,

Here are my suggestions for the digital category, because I feel there are some important distinctions to be made here.

    1) Digital Manipulation - Work in which the computer and various software are used to ALTER an original photograph or original painting or drawing made by the same artist.

    2) Digital Re-makes - Work in which an artist uses someone else's work and alters or enhances it according to his or her whim. I think it's important for artists to acknowledge when they are REVISING SOMEONE ELSE'S work!

    3) Digitally Conceived - Work that is generated from scratch on the computer, with the artist's hand as a tool - i.e. with a manual component, using a graphics tablet and a paint program, for instance, and no pre-existing artwork.

    4) Software Generated - Work that is generated by software programs such as fractal programs, in which the machine/software are at least as important as the artist's hand.

Also, I think the fine art category should be dropped, as one would hope that everything that appears on the site is in some way "fine art." Even pop art is a form of fine art.

    Hope this helps a little...

    Pete Miller 14 Feb 2007

I like that AW but I still think there should be design art and "web type"art add that one and I think you would have a home run!

    BySilent 14 Feb 2007

It looks like the 4 broad categories are way too broad I like Lynda's separation of the categories of Digital Art since they do have distinct ways of creating art. Lumping them together because they were created digitally is really not a far way to distinguish work especially for potential buyers who may have to sort through lots of work that they are not interested in if they just select a category without keywords.

The categories should be potential buyer friendly so they can go to areas that they are looking for without much digging through layers of work.

    kat Schilke 14 Feb 2007

How about Printmakers, monotype, monoprint, etching, solar plates, chine colle

    Susan Hill 15 Feb 2007

It may be more helpful to use some of the subcategories AS keywords and perhaps a list could be made so that the browser knows these keyword categories. It f you have to many categories at the beginning of the search you can vitally miss out on the art you want to find I hope this is a little bit helpful Thanks

I would love to see a Digital Fine Art category for paintings that are created using a painting software's oil, acrylic and other paints, such as those use by Corel Painter and other Digital painting programs.

    Robin McQuay 15 Feb 2007

I'd really love to see a "dark" catergory for the traditional art. Since my art doesnt really fit in fantasy or people/portraits. It is drawings of people but the focus is more about the dark atmosphere. Would love to see that :)
