AW is it in plan if the POST is OFF TOPIC like the posts here so many cluttered artwanted.com...to be removed by YOU? Where do we draw a line when post is OFF TOPIC?

A: Many topics are removed on a daily basis that are off topic by our staff and mod. We will continue to monitor the threads and remove what we feel needs to be taken off the boards.

QUESTION WHO HAS THE FINAL SAY ON BANNING?? THE STAFF A BOARD OF MODERATORS, OR ANDY?? OR ALL OF YOU?

A: Andy, the owner of the site, has to give approval before any member is banned, or if an account is deleted for their actions. Staff and mods report issues that need to be looked at, but they are unable to ban someone without the owner approving it.

QUESTION WHO SENDS OUT THE REPLYS TO THE EMAILS SENT FROM A MEMBER, AS TO REPORT ANOTHERS ACTIONS? WHO ANSWERS THESE?

A: These are answered by the rest of our staff, as well as replies to the message boards.

Blocking,Ignoring and reporting: these three are not new in human behavior, but the most disiplined and peaceful society like art society never expose it in such pubically, and Blocking,Ignoring and reporting normally used in negative emotions. Is it right to insist members to practice them?

A: We don't 'insist' that members use these features. We have them in place, because we have learned that some people are unable to get along or ignore other people and without this feature, they turn to fighting each other on our public boards. These features should only be used as a last resort if people are unable to deal with certain people.

As far as use of these three features concern,do you think after dramatically closing GDB ,these features has any importance?

A: We have already seen the need to continue to have these features after the GD boards were closed. They extend beyond the message boards being able to block e-mails and comments made on your artwork.

When Criticism (both way) is there with art,how you expect there will not be any reaction? Are you saying if somebody criticise my work(remeber the compailling of words in a creative manner is also work of art) and i am not agree,i'll block/ignore/report the other person?

A: All artists should be able to accept a little criticism for their style of artwork. Not everyone will love the way you draw/paint. We don't feel that the 'block' feature should be used because you got a bad criticism from someone. They should only be used if you have had constant problems with a certain member and have to block them from interacting with you.

I used to read some threads from GDB most of time again and again,is there any chance to find them some where?

A: At this time, they are all hidden and can not be accessed.

As long as you are closing GDB, do you please put a link at Sher's page so that we can find her threads/posts from GDB?

A: All threads are hidden at this time. In the future we may decide to 'unhide' certain thread or the entire board, but we have not made a final decision on the future of the GD boards yet.

Have you ever thought of becoming a free site as far as special features are concerned? There are several art sites that offer more features for free than this site does for paid members. I guess I'm asking you what does this site offer paid members that other sites do not? It just seems kind of odd that free accounts on this site can only add 3 images per month while other sites allow free accounts to post as many as they want.

ArtWanted.com is it's own site and does not operate based of what other sites are doing. We feel we offer both our free and premium members many great features and many reasons to be a member. Here is a list of the premium features that free accounts do not receive:

  • Unlimited Portfolio Images
  • Custom layout/design options.
  • Zoom/detailed view of artwork
  • Personal Blog
  • Sell Prints with our Print Program
  • Random Image Exposure
  • Website Preferred Image Placement
  • More Keywords on Every Image
  • Additional statistics reports on your portfolio
  • ArtWanted.com email address (optional)
  • Around 5 times the hits/traffic of a free member
  • More Features added all the time!

Also, are you guys connected to art dealers, collectors, gallery directors and so on? Or is it left to members to make these connections?

A: We have a lot of collectors/galleries surf our site for talent, but we don't have any partnerships with any if that is what you meaning.

QUESTION? HOW DO YOU BECOME A MODERATOR?

A: If anyone is interested in being a moderator, they can write our staff and explain their interest. We add and change mods every so often.

There were at least 5 emails from AW I did not receive from other artists. Are we having trouble with that again??

I did get, however, 3 or 4 AW surveys in a row. That's real gutsy.

A: We are not aware of any e-mail issues that are currently going on. The survey e-mails were because you have made 3-4 purchases in the last little while.

If I was putting a question to you, I'm not sure I would always want it to be shown on a Forum; are all questions on the ask AW to be made public? Regards

A: Yes, this thread is just for public questions that would apply to all of our members. If you have a private question, please use the CONTACT US link at the bottom of every page to contact our staff privately.

Well, my point is that a lot of art sites offer many of the features you mentioned for free. As a business you should focus on what other sites are doing, right? It is just good business.

Also, perhaps you should build rapport with art dealers and gallery directors because it may help your members to sell work which is the point of this site, I think.

Also, how do you know that art dealers and collectors frequent this site? Do you keep track of the people who visit?

A lot of sites that are free earn money based on ads. That is something you could pursue regardless if the site is free or not and it would allow you to build income that could be used to make the site better. :P

A: Our staff does visit many other art websites frequently and many of our staff are members of these websites to see what features and options they offer.

As for art collectors/dealers, we often receive e-mails from them about our members and our site.

As for the advertising, we realize we could make a little bit more money by putting ads everywhere on our site, but we want to keep the look of our site professional and keep the focus on art, not ads.

Is there a way to replace an image with an updated version and retain the comments already listed?

A: Yes, if you go to your MANAGE PORTFOLIO page and then click on the EDIT button on any of your images, you can upload a replacement image that will not remove any of your comments or hits.

I was wondering if Art wanted was going to publish another art book and if so do you know when?

A: At this time we don't have any immediate plans to publish another book. This isn't to say that we will never do so, just that it's not in our plans this year. If we do decide to publish another book, we will be sure let all of our members know.

    Brian Sherwin 29 May 2007

"As for the advertising, we realize we could make a little bit more money by putting ads everywhere on our site, but we want to keep the look of our site professional and keep the focus on art, not ads."

There are ways to do that without cluttering the site. You could have a section devoted to it. Just thoughts.

A: Yes, this is possible, but at this time we prefer to keep ArtWanted.com ad free.

Also, if the focus is on art and if the site is professional why is that certain forms of art are not allowed? I know people go back to the nudity issue all the time and I've read your responses, but honestly if this is a professional art site I would think nude works would be allowed.

To not allow them is to say that such work is not professional, since you say that this is a professional art site. Open up any history book and you will see some form of nudity. Heck, images of the statue of David can be found in public school text books. Is it more of an issue of not being able to monitor what kind of nudes are being uploaded?

A: No, this is not the reason. We have many reasons, but it's not really important. It's just something that we don't want to have on our site at this time.

I've been attempting to enter something in my bio section. I am using the "contact info" section and the submit button, but nothing is changing on my portfolio page.

A: The bio in your contact info area will update the new 'Biography' tab on your portfolio, but will not put that text on the side bar where it used to be. You may just be looking in the wrong place.

I saw a post that mentioned something about linking to other webpages. In said post I also saw that there is supposed to be some sort of button for that in each member's portfolio. I however am having a bit of trouble finding it if it's there. Perhaps a point in the right direction AW? Thanx Bill

A: If you put in a valid URL in the 'official website' link in your 'contact info' page, this will create a link on your portfolio to your website.

I would like to know if there is a way to delete the zoomed up portion of an image without having to delete the original and reuploading...thanx! Lynn

A: If you go to the EDIT IMAGE page, you will see a link that says 'Delete Current Zoom Image' under the place where you can upload a zoom image. This will allow you to delete it without effecting anything else.

AW i noticed lately that when i upload images here they loose little sharpness....That doesnt happen on any other site i belong to...I just uploaded image to my personal website and it didnt lose sharpness...same image...but when i do that in forum it does...ANY IDEA or CLUE why?

A: Most images are resized and optimized when uploaded to our site, which means that the quality and file size is usually reduced. This is so we don't have 5-20 MB images sitting in the portfolios of our members. We resize the images and optimize them for the web, so they load fast. The visible changes are usually minor, especially for those that have never seen the original. When you upload an image to your personal website, usually this optimization does not happen, so you may not see a quality change, but the file sizes could be very large as well.

AW, aside from making money like any business, why did you choose this type of site to build? Are you all practising artists? Any of your works secretly on here?

A: Andy, the founder of the site, is both an artist and taught college art classes. ArtWanted.com was started as a hobby site because of his interest in the arts, but grew into a business as the site grew. Some of our staff do have AW accounts and artwork on the site, but Andy has removed his artwork for personal reasons.
