Image Hits & Comments

A few members have mentioned they have seen a major reduction in the hits & comments since we launched the new site. While it has only been 6 days since we launched the new site, and it would be too early to determine any major trends, we wanted to share some data with everyone about this topic.

IMAGE COMMENTS:

So far this year, we average about 391 new images posted each day on ArtWanted.com. On these images, we average about 2,000 comments per day. Some days have more comments, other days have less, but the average for the year is 2,009 comments per day for all images on our site.

So far, in the last 6 days of the new site, we have averaged 1,971 comments per day on the artwork that is uploaded. This number shows that we are less than 2% below the average number of comments we normally get on a daily basis. In March of this year, we only averaged 1,680 comments per day, hundreds fewer than we are getting now with the new site. This 2% difference can also be explained by many other factors such as early website glitches, larger number of images to comment on each day, no additional exposure through the Top Ten reports like before and the fact that the 2nd part of the month always receives fewer comments than the first part of the month.

As we mentioned, it's too early to really determine any major trends based on the new site, but this early data shows very little to no change in the number of comments being posted on ArtWanted.com artwork each day. Some of you may be experiencing lower than normal comments, but other artists are getting higher than normal comments, which all even out to get the average number of comments mentioned above. We will continue to watch these numbers over time, but we are confident that the new site design has not made a drastic change in the way people post comments on our site.

IMAGE HITS:

Image hits are a different story and most of you should see a decline in your individual portfolio hits, compared to the first part of the year. This was expected, so let us explain why...

As you all know, when you look at the large version of an image in your portfolio, you also see two smaller thumbnail images of other random artwork in your portfolio. In our old site, these two 'random images' were being recorded as a 'hit' to your portfolio. So basically every time someone pulled up one of your images, three hits were recorded. One for the large image, and two additional hits for the two smaller images.

As we were working on the new site, we felt that it would be best if we did not record a 'hit' for these two smaller thumbnail images like we were before. While the stats numbers would go down after this change was made, we feel the numbers are more accurate than before. Now we only record a 'hit' if you see the 'large' image in your portfolio, and not the smaller thumbnails. Because of this change in the new site, we expect that most members will see a drop in their portfolio hits, compared to the first part of the year. You are still generally getting the same amount of people looking at your artwork as before, we simply don't count a hit for the thumbnails anymore.

As most of you know, we also removed the 'Top Ten' reports from our new website. Love `em or hate `em, the Top Ten reports did generate a lot of traffic for our members portfolios and also a lot of comments of our members artwork. With the Top Ten area now gone (at least temporarily), all of the exposure, hits and comments this area once generated will no longer be happening, which may reduce the number of hits and comments on many of your portfolios.

One other reason why some members may be seeing fewer hits to their images, is the shift of more images on our site. On our old site, we averaged 391 new images per day. With our new site, we have been averaging 513 new images per day. If most people have the same amount of time to surf ArtWanted.com during the day and they now have over 100 more images per day to look at, they may be more selective at what they look at, which would reduce the hits on many images on our site.

We hope this post explains to everyone why some of you may have seen changes in the number of comments/hits to your portfolios. We will continue to watch these trends over time to make sure our new site design is a positive one. We will also continue to look for more ways to bring exposure and fame to the artists found on our pages. Thanks!

AW FIRST THERE ARE MORE PAINTINGS EACH DAY NOW, BECAUSE UNPAYING MEMBERS CAN NOW UPLOAD MORE. I DO NOT SEE A SHIFT TO MORE COMMENTS ON OTHER PEOPLE. WHAT I AM FINDING AS I COMMENT IS THAT EVERYONE'S COMMENTS ARE DOWN. YES, I AM SEEING LESS WORK POSTED EACH FROM THE ONES WHO NORMALLY POST EACH DAY. I COMMENT IN THE DATE SECTION ONLY EACH DAY, AND REALLY THE TOTAL NUMBER I'VE NOT FOUND VERY DIFFERENT THAN BEFORE. YOU CAN CHECK THIS BY CLICKING ON THE DATES PRECEDING 7/15 AND THE DATES AFTER 7/15. NOW THE ONES THAT DON'T MAKE THE DATE SECTION I CANNOT SAY. ........................................................................................... I AM SURPRISED BY THE IMAGE HITS, BECAUSE BEFORE I NOTICED, IF I OPENED ONE OF MY PAINTINGS, IT COUNTED AS '1' HIT. I CHECKED ONE DAY ABOUT 1 OR 2 MONTHS AGO TO SEE IF EVERY TIME I CLICKED ON ONE OF MY OWN PAINTINGS IT WAS BEING COUNTED, AND SURPRISING, I FOUND IT WAS, BUT I ONLY SAW MY STATS JUMP BY ONE EACH TIME. ............................................................................................ JUST MY OBSERVATIONS, AW STAFF. I KNOW THAT YOU ARE WORKING TO CORRECT THINGS, AND I THANK YOU FOR THAT AND APPRECIATE TOO.

other apparent changes in behavior

When using the [large] and [view all] on a gallery, it used to count each large image that was displayed as a hit

Now it does not

I can see some support for both sides of this, but I would fall on the side of counting the hit, I assume if someone loaded the large view all they are going to look at it.

While I only consider it academic question and not a personal issue, it still seems we havn't accounted for a 90% decrease in new images hits with your explanation, I would suppose that other thumbnails besides the ones mentioned were counted as well, as in the daily brouse? This could account for a 90%+decrease in new images.

What I see is a 90%+ decrease in new images and a 60% decrease in existing, the two random thumbnails would account for the 60% in exisiting, but not the 90%+ in new images.

Dominic - You are correct that the 'view large image' and 'view all' images was not recording a hit since the site change. This was an oversight and we feel these large images should record a 'hit' when viewed in the large size. We have changed this behavior this morning, so that large images record a hit when viewed from your portfolio.

We will continue to look for other reasons why 'new image hits' may be down and share that information as we have it.

Hits or no hits, the new website work is fantastic from a user's point of view. It is modern, easy to navigate and gives great information to the artist.

The comments from fellow AW members have been very helpful to me and I hope they will continue to rise using he new format.

Thanks for you work, AW staff, and the members' continued participation.

Bob

Change in behavior

Large View All

Now counts/records hits on my own images when I am logged in.

AW........I WILL HAVE THAT CUP OF COFFEE, ARMANDO, WHILE I WRITE THIS. :-) THANK YOU FOR THE OFFER. .......... I AM WILLING TO BET THAT IF YOU TALLY UP THE COMMENTS, THE VERY SAME PEOPLE WILL BE IN THE TOP TEN, BUT WITH LESS COMMENTS THAN THEY HAD BEFORE 7/15. SO, TO ME, THAT DOESN'T MEAN A SHIFT IN COMMENTS FROM PEOPLE TO OTHER PEOPLE.

Personally I am not all concerned about comments or image hits as I do not sell anyway and am here for my friends mostly and the community. Yes, I realize that it matters to many so understand this is my opinion only so please do not take it the wrong way. And as to comments I think they might go down as there will be less reason for some to comment as the top ten no longer is around. Personally as soon as I realized that people would comment on my work just to have me comment back was the day I started to really dislike the top ten. It meant nothing to me. What is important to me is if you comment on my art then comment because you like it and not because you want me to comment back. Thanks guys. And PS. I do on the whole like the new AW, albeit a few bugs to work out and definitely not keen on the grey but that is another story lol.

One or two things - the 5 images I've posted since 15/7 have a total of less than 100 hits between them (i.e. average 20 per image), whereas I always got more than 100 per image and sometimes nearer 200. Don't get me wrong - maybe people just don't like them or they're fed up or whatever - I'm prepared to accept that! What I often find though is that if I go to "new images by date" and I've posted two that day, only one shows. Is that deliberate/new? If I make a small edit to the one that's not showing up, hey presto! it comes back and the other one disappears? Sometimes the listing on the left shows 47 new images posted (or whatever) and all I can see are 7 or 8. Is that a glitch or am I doing something wrong? In general I like the new site but I find it's a bit "clunky" and it really doesn't want to show me feedback. It just seems to freeze up - and it's not temp internet files on my machine as I clear them out every other day. Sometimes number of hits by reference to "newest" is dead slow too. I've just been putting it down to teething troubles but this sequence of comments has made me think again...

with such a growing site as artwanted, and with so many artists and images, i think it's a good idea to use and support the use of Top 10 reports once again.

Kristy Hawkes 22 Jul 2008

I agree with Judy. A comment is so much more sincere and appreciated when it comes from somebody who just likes your work and wants to let you know. I've noticed some people playing a game, it seems, commenting on nearly every image uploaded. I think with that kind of thing going on, it makes the top ten almost fixed. I like the top ten. I hope to see it come back and I hope people don't abuse it.

Dear AW,

The improvements in this site are excellent! You obviously have worked very diligently to develop the "new look"! Thank you so much! I love referring people to this site and am pleased when they tell me how professional it looks!

As for the hits and comments: I don't really sell from this site. It used more to refer my friends and local art customers to view my works since I am not currently connected with a Gallery.

It's important to understand the real reason why we're here; we are here to showcase our artwork to the world on the web. We need the world wide webbers to know we exist. And, in order for that to happen, we must promote this site and ourselves, to other avenues on the web. That being said, the site needs easy access to accommodate the vistors and potential buyers. Most visitors like reading comments on an image. What attracks me to an online art gallery, is life. If there hasn't been anyone visited the site since 2006, I don't want to browse no further. I also look to see members interacting with other members, like a neighborhood type of community thing. Stop by and give a house warming gift. I also agree with you all when some folks would come to your profile to comment, only to have you to comment on theirs. I do think that is wrong, and I don't blame you for not participating in that. But, for the most part, it is also good to comment if you really like that artist's work. I comment on the oh so beautiful artwork that has graced this site, just remarkable, and I mean that. Just my twenty five cents worth, I can't afford any more. Peace and love :o)

Well to me I have no interest in the top ten. There was plenty of proof that people would comment just so you would comment back. I even saw one guy who said the exact same thing in everything he commented on! He always said word for word, "awesome work well done" or something to that effect so who needs that kind of feedback??? Nope I for one am glad it is gone!

Dominic Melfi 22 Jul 2008

I am not enamoured with comments as they pertain to the collectors, but I think the individual has enough option in turning off, making invisible etc. that we shouldnt object to those who want to play comment exchange, actually it has become part of AW culture. The way I see it the site provides those people with an activity they enjoy and maybe it livens up their existence.

I am interested in hits, and that seems to say something about the images tho the recent confusion makes that less clear, Most sites record views, but dont necessarily list top 10. But foe example on youtube I like to see haow many views a video has.

I am a newbie here so I am not familar with the top ten everyone is commenting on but I don't like that idea either. I like hearing from other artists with honest opionions and a honest critique of my work. I think that helps to strengthen my painting. Anyway just wanted to say that I really like the new look and the fact that I have met some wonderful artists on this site. There is a lot of amazing talent here. I have told all my friends about artwanted and some have even signed up. Just wanted to Thank Artwanted for the fine site and all the new additions.

I totally agree with what Judy said. Glad that the infamous Top 10, which, with very few exceptions, was entirely a joke. Glad is gone now and hope AW will never bring it back since commenting on every image, like it or not, was the street to take to be in the infamous number every single day. AW is doing one great job trying to improve the site and thus far are succeeding. I like the changes they have made. Keep it up, AW.
