ArtWanted.com - New vs. Old

On July 15th, ArtWanted.com launched a complete redesign of our website and over a dozen new features. The new ArtWanted.com website has been up for almost two months now, so we thought it would be interesting to share some of the stats/data we have collected as we compared the old site with the new site. We pulled a lot of numbers from our database and our statistics reports to compare the old site (in June 2008) with the new site (in Aug. 2008) to see how the two sites compared with each other. (We did not use any numbers in July, because we updated the site in the middle of that month.) Here is what we found:

New Members - The new site brought in 15% more members in Aug. than in June. We feel that the easier navigation and the new member feature overview page help bring in new members to the site.

Image Uploads - In Aug. we had 47% more images uploaded to ArtWanted.com than in June. The more images we have on the site, the larger the art community and more hits that are brought in to the site. This jump is mostly attributed to free members being able to upload more images. However, we noticed that even Premium members are uploading more images with the new site. This being said, the average number of images displayed on the daily upload page has not really changed, which should be good news for everyone. This is because the same number of members are uploading artwork as before, they are just uploading them directly to their own portfolio, which does not take away the exposure from all the other members of the site. NOTE: Only the first 3 images uploaded for each day are displayed on the 'daily uploads' page.

New Message Board Topics - We saw a 42% increase in the number of new message board topics made on our message boards with the new site. We also saw a 28% increase in the number of unique artists posting messages to the message boards. More and more members are using the message boards with the new site than before, which builds the ArtWanted.com community and friendships between members.

Image Comments & Image Hits - We did see a 17% decline in the number of comments posted on artwork and a 42% decline in image hits. However, both of these numbers were expected to drop due to some of the changes we made to the site and how image hits are recorded. These numbers are actually better than projected. In general, your artwork is being seen by about the same number of people as before, we are just not recording as many hits during the same user session as before. For the full details, read the following post.

Website Search Engines - The new website is better optimized for Search Engines and we saw a 4% increase in traffic from search engines with the new site. The more hits we get from search engines, the more hits everyone gets on their personal portfolios.

Website Pageviews - Our website logs show a 13% increase in website pageviews for the site. We also see a 16% jump in the number of pages each visitor is looking at during a visit to our site. These statistics mean that people that come to the new site are looking at more pages and artwork than before.

Time On Site - Our statistics also show that website visitors are staying on our site 10% longer than before, and our 'Bounce Rate' has dropped by 15%. Both of these numbers indicate that people are staying on our website longer with the new site than the old.

These numbers, along with other data we have collected, show a big improvement for the ArtWanted.com community due to the changes that were made in July. We recognize that these major changes caused a handful of bugs to pop-up on the site and some recent down-time has been seen, and we apologize for this. However, even with these issues, the data we have seen and user feedback we have read, points to a better site because of the changes that were made in July.

Our goal is to always make improvements to ArtWanted.com and we appreciate the feedback we have received on how we can do better. More improvements, better performance and new features are on their way! We appreciate all of our members and the community you have created for each other. Thank You!

All very good but where are the stats for the time lost because people cant get to the site, promises of yet more "improvements" please please please get this one to work properly first from friday to yesterday the site was non accessible for over 42 hours thats no way to run a site. no good trying to baffle people with stats, these only happen when the site is running, since you moved server the downtime has increased by over 200%

I also noticed the DOWNTIME is more frequent.

Kelvin - We have to politely disagree with your comments about our down-time. Our staff in on our site all day long and we have never had a full day of down time, let alone 42 hours of down time. If this was true, you would see a huge drop in the number of images uploaded in a day or none at all. You can look at the daily uploads page and see that every day we have around 300 new images posted every day. If we had long periods of down time, you would see those number drop from 300 to 150 or to 0 images uploaded in a day, which is not the case. Perhaps you were hitting our site at the exact moments when it was down, but most of the time it was up for our members and the public. We have detailed statistics on our network and website and know exactly when it's down and for how long.

This being said, we have already acknowledged the recent increase in down-time in other posts. This started around mid-August, which was one month after the new site launched and it's not related to the new site in any way. Our staff is very aware of the increase in down-time and they are working every day to research and fix the issues that are causing these network problems. We hope to have them resolved very soon. Thanks for your patience.

Just noticed a new downtime last night here. Not sure how much time long because I went to bed. I also see only 5-6 images (IMAGES BY DATE) and the comments are displaying in delay.

Here I thought it was my dial up connection.....

As of right now, over 100 images have been uploaded so far today. As we look at the time these images were uploaded, we see that there is less than 15 minutes between any two images that were uploaded. We see the same trend with new comments as well. This means that it would have been impossible for the website to be down for over 15 minutes, because members were uploading artwork and posting comments at least every 15 minutes apart for the last 8 hours.

When you say the site is 'down' what are you seeing on screen? Do you see an error message? Do you see a browser message? Do you see just a white screen with the page loading? Any additional information you can provide to our staff about these 'down-times' will help us determine what the real cause of the problem is. The next time you see that our site is 'down', please e-mail our staff at info @ artwanted.com with a screen shot and details. Thanks

I get an error message that server is down. However, next time I will write it down for you. My downtime was about 2 hours.

Susan Epps Oliver 12 Sep 2008

I get a lot of downtime too......it's telling me the server's down.

Armando Salas 12 Sep 2008

O.K. AW. Next time I'll take the screenshot.

Since my English isn't good I cannot remember the exact phrases, but something like:

JRun Close connection ?

Macromedia is unreachable to complete... ?

Armando Salas 12 Sep 2008

"IMAGE COMMENTS"

Only 40 comments listed from 9:26 AM September 11 to 11:09 AM September 12.

There are many more, since I checked few portfolios and read comments done in that period but they don't appear listed.

Pamela Davidson 12 Sep 2008

I am getting the same messages as Armando.. and its down at least 4hrs or more every day.

Armando Salas 12 Sep 2008

"NEW IMAGES BY DATE"

I have already counted 49 images through your widget, but this one is the screenshot.

If that's the case AW then I'm totally amazed, as I really can't believe my timing is that good/bad..:-0)

I've had the following message about 25 times over the space of several hours in the past couple of days.

Server Error

The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request.

JRun closed connection.

While this original topic was created to point out the positive changes with the new site, we realize that the recent downtime is an issue to many members.

We have posted some additional information about this topic on the following thread:

Are you People kidding, I sure hope so,. With all the new changes and updates to thi site, that if there were a few "incoviences" or down time, it should be expected, just as the bugs were finnaly weeded out as you Learned what the problems were with your own personal additions or programs, as they came up!.

If getting it right means a little down time, so be it, it's not for ever. AW great work, keep it up!,

let me guess the submit wasn't working so you hit it a few times?

WESTERN ARTWORK By Denny Karchner 26 Sep 2008

Sounds like a "stutter problem," or maybe just hitting the "reload" or "refresh" two too many times Jim.
