Memento Mori

"Never forget that you must die; that death will come sooner than you expect.... God has written the letters of death upon your hands. In the inside of your hands you will see the letters M.M. It means 'Memento Mori' - remember you must die." ~J. Furniss, Tracts for Spiritual Reading

thank you for commenting wendy ! i dont expect much response on this one -- alot of people shy away from my darker themes.

the guineas for groats is a quote:

Old Time, in whose banks we deposit our notes

Is a miser who always wants guineas for groats;

He keeps all his customers still in arrears

By lending them minutes and charging them years.

~Oliver Wendell Holmes

i've really been into words in my art lately and while looking for more inspiration i came across that quote and it just really struck me as true...in the end no matter how much we put it we still come up short.

one more

this picture isnt one of my super polished ultra-refined three month long pictures. i did it in about a week - and honestly would have been done sooner but working on it too long at a time made me kind of depressed -- go figure eh!?

Nicely done Hinsel a classic message. I am definintely a fan of text in art. I might make the hour glass stand out a bit more. It took me awhile to figure out what it was. I would like to see what you could do with Goethe's Faust. good show man!!

That's a pretty powerful message, great job Hinsel! It sort of reminds me of Madi Gras imagery :-)

thanks for the comment rob! yeah the hourglass seems to be a snag for alot of folks looking at it but compositionally i couldn't much think of where else i wanted to put it.

"Art is long, time short." - goethes faust

thanks for commenting kari! mardi gras eh ? well tomorrow IS Fat Tuesday so as we say in New Orleans "les bon temps rouler!"

HInsel, you always have such cool tiny details in your pieces that make one want to stay for an "extended viewing". Neat stuff here.

thanks dawn!

i need to work on some other things tho - i'm finding some folks have trouble realizing that thing on the left is a giant hourglass...*shrug*
