Hot Animal Machine

6 hours, four beers, and several tubes of paint later...we got Henry Rollins. I wanted to capture the raw energy he distributes during his lives ,at the same time present his keen razor intelligence. Th first part comes off well....

acrylic, spray paint, and charcoal on fabric, 49.5" x 60"

OH yeah - that man is an ANIMAL - PRIMAL and RAW - and has a nice set of pecs, too! ;)

The eyes and body are perfect, but something about his mouth doesn't sit well with me, but I can't put my finger on it.

You sure captured his energy fantastically. (He really has got some cool spoken word pieces out, too, that show a bit of a gentler side.)

thanks Dawn, that's what I was thinkin' too, the mouth presented some problems. I will try to fix that

nice work rob! i admire the passion of your craft. this is a good tribute to the man, back against the darkness, sneering at the light. no mistaking the power.

I think it's that the mouth on his left (our right) doesn't have enough light to bring the upper lip "out". It looks too flat, I think. I hope you understand what I mean - sorry if I'm not describing what I'm seeing too well.

As always, I am in awe of your technique!

Thanks Hinsel, I appreciate it man. Dawn, that's exactly what i was thinkig too. It looks like he has only 1/2 an upper jaw.

Awsome image Rob..are you having a show of your paintings any-where? you have soo many of them..any future plans for them in your area?

terence ulrich 07 Feb 2005

Nice work Rob...your one of my favorites!!!

His eye's may be a little too close also, but damn I wish I could bring myself to paint as loose as you do.

Rob Jones 07 Feb 2005

Thanks Terence and Juan, your words are always appreciated. I am having a 30-40 piece solo show in the middle of may here in columbus. I've been trying to do pieces I haven't exhibit before. Almost ot forty.

Rob Jones 07 Feb 2005

Alright Dawn I think I got it

Terence I see what you mean

terence ulrich 07 Feb 2005

I see in the close up that its just a lack of color in the right corner of his left eye that makes it look too close in the small image.

Your pieces look even better closeup!!!!

I saw Black Flag in 82 when Henry first joined, he only had like 1 tattoo and long ass hair. Oh, and he was totally skinny.

Dawn Schmidt 07 Feb 2005

I dunno Rob, can you bring that painting and hunky Hank over for cocktails so I can compare the two in person?? ;)

Rob Jones 07 Feb 2005

Well Henry does owe me one...yeah it crazy lookin' at photos of young Hank, just some scrawny punk kid, compared to now...he's still really short. I had no idea unitl I caught his spoken word in college...He always seems bigger than life though...anyway thanks again guys

Rob Jones 08 Feb 2005
