Do you think that potential buyers look at ratings?

If potential buyers couldn't care less about ratings, why should we?

I assume that many of you will disagree with me.

yes, they do Nina...

I've had several mention comments and a low 'sore thumb' rating..they also look me up on message boards (oh the horror!) So i'm trying my best to behave myself ....:sighs and mumbles:...

Thanks for your response, Sher. :)

Myself, I say no!.

One never knows what someone likes, and if they are influenced by rating to make up their minds, I think they have some major problems to be told what they do or don't like.

But I don't hold out my pinky, I hold out the one in the middle if they think they have to have acceptance of their choices.

Kind of like food...does it taste good?

Did I say I do cut off my nose to spite my face? Oh...but that's me.

Some play the game and some don't. I don't.

Pespi or Coke ? And no, not nose blow.

I don't think potential buyers would be influenced by ratings if all the ratings for a particular painting were "8 - 10" and one happened to be "3", for example, written by someone with a personality problem.

I think a potential buyer would see that "3" rating for what it is.

On another site I received a terrible rating for a painting of mine, that I thought was quite good!

I think we have to let ourselves here on AW be far less concerned with getting a low feedback rating or 2 from someone who has problems. :-) I do not mean to be argumentative. I just feel that getting a few very low ratings is not such a big deal.

One of the comments were ..and i quote, " A professional art site wouldn't allow such rude childish remarks .." In which i had to explain that this is a site that allows all realms of ages and all artistic levels... Which i enjoy, and simply explained as best i could... You must understand that people who visit here from my site link have no clue what this site is about... : )

Albeit, an artists work should convince a potential buyer in itself. But i did want to convey that they do read the comments and the numbers and it has made for some interesting explaining...

I've had contacts mention comments, but never the rating numbers to me. =)

Nina Kuriloff 12 Feb 2005

Have these contacts become buyers of your art, Gayla? :)

i don't know about potential buyers, but i have had customers for whom i have done commissions come and look at thier piece and read the comments. luckily the comments and ratings were good.

Hard to say. For me, I think it is the fact that the style of art I do gets reactions either way in general helps to sum up a potential client's mind. My type of work runs hot or cold ( like anybody's)with buyers and companies....... They can see how other people respond and go with how they feel. It's hard for me to explain.

I figure if my art is good enough to be approached by a professional company, I'm doing pretty well, bad ratings or not....I enjoy reading how other people react in general; it lets me know if I am on the right track with something.....I get a kick out of most of comments on my work because it lets me know that I am starting to get a following (people are starting to notice my work). Crits help me to try harder next time; the #'s really aren't as important to me....they are a bonus if i did something right

don't know if this helped with the topic in question, lol

I guess what I am really trying to say, Eileen, is: If several ratings (number and rating comment) seem absurdly low and ridiculously overcritical, that a potential buyer would see these ratings for what they are, which is ridiculous in nature. I think that there is a tendency amongst many AW folk (at least those who post here) to overreact to the dreadful comments that occur now and then.

I know that most of you will disagree with me. Disagreement is fine. :) We are just having a discussion in which there is disagreement about the perceived importance of ratings. :-)

Patrick Miller 12 Feb 2005

I think an educated art buyer will not lend too much weight to ratings on this site. But you cannot always rely upon that.

Gayla Drummond 12 Feb 2005

Yes, Nina...some have ordered posters and such that I offer, and others have had me do custom work for them. =)

Nina Kuriloff 12 Feb 2005

It's nice to hear that you are making sales of your art via AW, Gayla. :)

N. Michael Bryant 13 Feb 2005

I would think that a buyer would much rather view the work than the ratings. If a piece catches my attention it's not because of the 1-10 score it received. Instead of what it invokes in me. I have heard so many people say, " I could have painted "The scream" ". Fact is, they didn't and it's a Masterpiece. to each his own, but if ratings hold you back from buying a piece, you're not a true art lover.

Gayla Drummond 13 Feb 2005

Amen, Norm. =)

Thanks, Nina. I've said it before, I'll probably say it again....joining AW has been one of the best moves I ever made concerning my artwork. =)

Nina Kuriloff 13 Feb 2005

That is terrific Gayla, and an excellent endorsement for AW! :) Thus far, my buyers from AW have been AW artists. :) I hope that before my subscription ends, that I will have more buyers of my art from AW.

Great going, Gayla! :-)

Juan Gomez 13 Feb 2005

That Gold Trophey..and the work..comments well that depends..if that's is an issue hide them..Cleints generally look but most important the merit of the work will over-shadow all..regard-less..

Gayla Drummond 13 Feb 2005

Best of luck, Nina! =)
