Put your actions where your words are

Turn off your ratings for three days as a declaration - let's see how the site works without them - anyone willing?

I have turned mine off. Don't know if I'll turn them on again.

The downside of this is I get very little comments alone when I've turned off my ratings - I miss the emails. :(((

Since mine have been off since April, I've not missed them...

Mine are off too, Greg. I Have no desire to turn them back on either. It seems that the comments become more involved without a number after them.

I turned off my ratings about a week ago, and I prefer it that way.

I like to use the ratings as feedback for whatever I'm working on at the time. So many people tend to skip right past something unless they think it's a 10, though. This, combined with the fact that my work is mainly very simple children's book illustrations, rather than fine art, would leave me at the end of the day with few ratings and fewer comments.

I think before AW starts making changes in the rating system, they're going to have to figure out just why people want their work rated in the first place. If they want to accumulate 10's and Top Ten trophies (which is fine), then the rating system should be geared towards eliminating lowballers. If, however, people are interested in the rating system as a tool to provide feedback on one's work, then the rating system needs to be geared towards that end (lowballers and mean-spirited comments are less of a factor in this case). I suspect that there's a small but vocal minority that really has much interest in their ratings at all.

Anyway, I have to admit that I breathed a sigh of relief once my ratings were turned off, and I don't believe I'll be turning them on again anytime soon!

Turned mine off a few weeks back.

I seldom comment on anyone if they have theirs turned on.

mine have been off for a year?????dunno, but a long time:)

Since I went on this site in the first place for help in improving my art and since artists on artwanted only comment on art they like, so with much art being ignored and without giving grades it still will only be a place to tell your farvorite people how great they are. I guess the only reason to be here is to look at some beautiful art. Idon't worry about the grades on mine so I guess if it helps something I will close mine too.

I turned my ratings off too last week. ( at least I think it was last week ) I'm not concerned too much with ratings but I respect people's preference to want them as a constructive path to their self improvement. Frankly, I just enjoy what I do. However, I do agree with Ellen about lots of good art being ignored, which is a great shame. I think I'd rather spend my time doing my painting than let some rogue spoiler stalking the portfolios get me down. It is difficult though sometimes.

Cheers

Rusty

Greg

I had mine off for two weeks and was only taking comments

but as one person rightly put it to me if we want changes then you have to be in the game so i turned mine back on to help ...for the better ment of artwanted and the system

foot note i did have just the same amount of fun with out them on the comments where nicer and no low ballers came near me

no number no rate no comment all clean fun

I like that idea Leigh. Strictly views, could prove to be interesting

sher richardson 08 Feb 2005

One problem with # of views would be people clicking all day long on works they want to be on a top10 ...:giggles:.. i had a visual of that...

..people wearing bandaids on their clicker finger : )

Greg i may just turn them off. Its getting rather boring having 30-50 10's then a "9" or lower at the last minute of the day. Ive had this happen to at least 10 of my images already. Heck how can u rate art anyhow?

Greg Summers 09 Feb 2005

20 or 30 10s Justin - I rarely get more than 10 to 15 ratings at best - I don't comment or rate much at all - so it's quite obvious the ratings are a form of currency - and reward. Activity brings activity.

With that said, turning them off makes a statement for change - leaving them on and fighting the system from within is a fantasy - and an addicitive process. How many hours do those who are rated most highly spend on the site?

Well, enough said on my part. I'm sure this will not please others. Meanwhile, I continue to explore roses, which, in the long run will be more productive for me anyway.

"- so it's quite obvious the ratings are a form of currency - and reward."

Summed up the entire system in under 15 words.....
