Attn. Photoshop artists. Opinions wanted.

Hi there, I'm a new member here. I would like *only* the opinions of those who work in photoshop on my work. So far, I've uploaded 5 of my most favorite pieces. So please stroll on over to www.ArtWanted.com/GabrielNYC and give me your thoughts. Here are 2 images I did (before and after)

I got the idea from reading online penny dreadfuls & pulp fiction stories.

Oh come on... 50 people viewed this posting and only ONE has commented?

I like where you going, but the top figure got too blurry. Is the bottom origianl or is it the source reference for the other? If its original, congrats on imitating a period style. On the sepia toned one, I'd adjust the curves or contrast a little. It seem too yellow and a little too light in the darker areas. All in all, I like it though.

sorry it took me so long to get over gabriel! heheh!

are these both yours or is the left one before and the right after ? this is done in photoshop ?

excellent style if so - very well imitation of natural medium - i like the image itself as well. good text too. the bit of blur is a tad out of place to keep 100% with natural medium perhaps but thats a small thing really.

tell me more about the image and i'll comment some more -- ie is this pencil scanned and reworked in photoshop, pure photoshop, or ??

keep creating!

Actually I meant to do those effects on the right side. Ive seen many pulp mags in the UK well preserved and some of them are blurry, crinkly and very yellow. I tried to emulate some smearin w/o going overboard

Herb Roe 14 Feb 2005

Cool, blurry works when you want it to.

Steph Salt 15 Feb 2005

Sorry you haven't manipulated it enough to be able to call this your own work.

Your use of Photoshop is pretty good, I must admit. But just removing some hair, painting over the pursuers clothes to make them look like a cloak, tinting it and adding a mask, still leaves it looking an awful lot like the original.

Gabriel Leal 15 Feb 2005

YOU'RE giving me a critique? ive just seen your photoshop stuff. at least I use more than just copy and paste. i know how to size heads so the size is relative to torsos. unlike the forum or that gladiator one of yours. i also use my own custom filters, plugins, brushes. I also use windows paint for pixel by pixel editing.

and I dont see your gladiator one being "manipulated" enough to call your own.

i want **real** photoshop artists to comment on my stuff, salt.

how long have you been working in photoshop?

Steph Salt 16 Feb 2005

Painted in Photoshop Gabriel, and I don't take offense :D

Those two pictures you pointed out were done for fun only.

Dawn Schmidt 16 Feb 2005

Gabriel, before you jump on Steph, please take a leisurely walk through her portfolio, including the second page. She is familiar with digital work.

Perhaps you are new here, and don't realize that we just did a project of AW member's portraits, all just for fun. They were not meant to be perfect examples of digital or traditional works - they were meant to bring smiles.

This "Artwork Critiques" area is just for that...other artist's opinions and critiques of the work you post. You need to be prepared to occasionally hear things that you don't like, just as those of us who submit to galleries and shows hear varied opinions all the time. It is part of being an artist.

Please don't take offense so quickly, we are all here to help each other become better at what we do. :)

Hi Gabriel. Welcome to the "zoo." What is it that you really want to know?--Denny

Gabriel Leal 16 Feb 2005

I was just incredibly offended that she would say I "didnt manipulate it enough to make it my own" and made the assumption i didnt put much work into it.

Herb Roe 16 Feb 2005

She may have been concerned about copyright issues, etc. I'm sure this piece probably is old enough that copyright has expired, but if you took modern reference, changed it as much as you did that one, and then signed your name at the bottom, you could be liable for copyright infringement. When I'm using reference other than my own photos, I always try to keep in mind how recognizable is it compared to the original. It's something to think about anyway.

Gabriel Leal 16 Feb 2005

Oh i realized that. before I went about to making the image with the shadow, I sent a letter to Conde-Nast who owns the shadow and i got permission to edit or create any image with him provided I dont make any profit.

Herb Roe 17 Feb 2005

Cool, legal beagle.

Steph Salt 17 Feb 2005

Thats good Gabriel I was concerned about copyright. But I broke my owns rules here and I apologise whole heartedly.

I do try to make helpful critiques before the "But!" and this time I failed miserably. So I am ashamed of myself.

But then your reaction was a bit over the top as well :) If you had informed me that you had permission I would of apologised even sooner. :)

No hard feelings :)

Gabriel Leal 18 Feb 2005

Likewise, Mrs. Salt :) *chuckle* Im half expecting John Steed to pop in..

"we're needed mrs. salt.."

Ive just been going through a bad patch as of late.

Gabriel

Steph Salt 19 Feb 2005

*Goes to fetch my leathers!* I'm ready Steed :D

LOL!

Gabriel Leal 20 Feb 2005

its always a pleasure to meet fellow avengers fans

Herb Roe 20 Feb 2005

Did you ever read "The Stars My Destination" by Alfred Bester. He wrote alot of the radio serial stuff for the Shadow and other stuff way back. It's kinda the first cyberpunk novel, 40 or 50 years before there was cyber. On my top ten list.

Gabriel Leal 21 Feb 2005

Im going to look into it! thanks alot
