What's offensive and what's not??

Believe me people, I'm all about taking steps not to step on the toes of anybody, but when you're an artist, it's kind of difficult to try to police the sensibilities of others. I've got so much material that I would love to put on this site, but I fear that I might offend select folks because of the subject matter. People need to remember that it's just art and expression, and in my view, this is a medium that should have the same protection to project, the same as a person's opinion. That's just my opinion. Peace

Thanks. I probably will. It's just truly amazing though what used to make people laugh back in the day, now makes people gasp in horror. Hell, even "Mad" and "Crack'd" magazines have to watch their step today.hehe. Oh well, here's to all the Slim Shadys of the drawing boards, Cheers!

Personally Im usually all about not beating around the bush or stepping on stones to please people or sugar coat something or try not to offend someone.

Dont get me wrong I do have feelings and morals and Im not out to hurt anyone or cause trouble. But Im going to express myself the way I want to and feel I should. Of course there are ways to do this without acting stupid.

But in this case there are people out there who are easily offended because they are simply ignorant or closed minded. Or perhaps all they really know and was taught is to have drama in their lives so they make it a point to have petty thing apply to them in a effort to add more stress to their lives by taking everything personally, and they probably do it unknowingly.

You can only be who you are and you should be true to yourself. Art is expression, if someone isnt happy with it or you then so be it, I mean who cares, "In the light of all Eternity does it really matter" what people think of you?

I think you should post away. There are always going to critics and people that appreciate you and your cause or they wont.

'Publish and be damned!' Go for it! I'm dying to see your 'Offensive' pictures. I do find it tiresome and somewhat immature to see nipples red taped. Although sensitivity to other's feelings should be considered ( I fully agree with this )I do wonder at the value of what I consider to be misplaced and inappropriate censorship. The majority of artists on Artwanted site are mature adults with a wealth of life's experience behind them. The painting of the nude figure for example, has a long tradition going back to the year dot in terms of the history of art. I'm sure that the AW artists ( and AW staff ) have not walked round the Louvre, the Prado, the Tate Gallery etc with their hands over their eyes every time they came to a nude figure! This is of course, only my opinion, others may not agree. Art for art's sake, please!

Actually, nipples, bungs, clits and cleavage I don't even touch, it's not my style. My material goes even alot deeper than that. I guess I offended someone with my "Rest now my beautiful" picture. I recieved an email getting blasted about how I should focus on more "Wholesome" things and not try to ruin someone else's day with visions of death. Hey, death is life I'm sorry. And if that picture was all it took to offend... oh boy! don't let me post any other of my work! Not to mention, getting kicked off of or banned from a site for hurting someone' feelings who can't take it.. not worth it to me I guess.

The word "good" has many meanings. For example, if a man were to shoot his grandmother at a range of five hundred yards, I should call him a good shot, but not necessarily a good man. ~G.K. Chesterton

One man's frankness is another man's vulgarity. ~Kevin Smith

In certain trying circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity furnishes a relief denied even to prayer. ~Mark Twain

Censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime. ~Potter Stewart

Nature knows no indecencies; man invents them. ~Mark Twain, Notebook, 1935

Morality is the best of all devices for leading mankind by the nose. ~Friedrich Nietzsche, The Antichrist

What is morality in any given time or place? It is what the majority then and there happen to like, and immorality is what they dislike. ~Alfred North Whitehead, Dialogues, 30 August 1941

Very good points and phrases indeed. People just need to recognize that not all art is about pretty colors splashed onto a canvas after tripping over a paint can. (not that I'm down speaking abstract art). Like was mentioned earlier, it's the individual's perception of a piece is what dictates them to react in a positive or negative fashion.

Bring everything you have. That's an artist. If both feet are in one place, yer not going anywhere. Take someone like Dali. He did what he did and took no prisoners. Express!

Stephen Gray 24 Jan 2005

I think everyone should do what their heart tells them, cause yeah, that's why we are artists

Juan Gomez 24 Jan 2005

Here goes "TO PAINT OR NOT TO PAINT?" is that the question...heck be your-self and just do the darn work..have guts..what is offensive to one won't be to the other..all relative..be the artist you are...all you create is a reaction positive or plain negative......here in ARTWANTED.com remember to cover those nips or genitals..or they'll delete them..too many kids roam this site for that reason alone..among a few more as well..PEACE OUT..

RQ Trietsch 24 Jan 2005

Don't kids read or look at National Geographic?

Yup I think we should ban that trashy magazine.

And don't kids have nipples and penis's etc?

Don't look at that!! You might go blind...pee on the floor!!

Another glorious day....but until You make the rules, need anymore need to be said?

rosemary gioielli 24 Jan 2005

ps Stephen. I think that is a beautiful piece of art... :)

Patrick Miller 24 Jan 2005

Now this is offensive.....what a waste of good vegetables!

Juan Gomez 24 Jan 2005

Soo true RQ..just simply stating what they do here..not out-side AW's relm..no rules are made..let alone by me..just generalizing standards set here..agreed on those topics just stated RQ..remember OUT-SIDE of Artwanted.com...

Lindy van den Bosch 25 Jan 2005

Artwanted really need to get into the 21st century, or even the 14th century. Nudity is part of art, always have and always will be.

Jude 25 Jan 2005

I personally am not offended by nude art; I love to draw the human body. And as far as what is acceptable nude art I think there is the line that can be crossed.

My 13 year old son is into photography and would like to start posting his work on this site, he watches over my shoulder when I am reading the forums and he has seen and read some of the some of the things posted and told me he thinks its sick and he tells me I should not be on this site. LOL.. I mean no offence to any that may have posted things that a young boy conceders sick..

And he does have a point and here it is...

I monitor what he does on the web, and he knows his limits and when he sees some of the things that we adults might laugh at. I have no problem with him viewing nude art as long as it is not over the line.

About a month ago a funny thing happened, I ran a test to see if there was porn on my comp and it came up listed that it was from this site. Boy did my son get a kick out of that.

As long as AW allows young artist to participate on this site, I think the rules they set are there to protect the young ones and themselves.

Stephen Gray 25 Jan 2005

Whatever.. I think that after everything, and at the end of the day, it all boils down to personal preference. Some are just more vocal about what they don't like than others I guess.

Hinsel Scott 25 Jan 2005

its the squeaky wheel that gets the grease...

...the empty can rattles the most...

keep creating, thats all that matters.

Earl Kelley 25 Jan 2005

And when they start allowing Nude work, where is the Line?

There will be all sorts of complaints about what is art and what is Porno.

Will be like opening up a hornets nest.

Just my Humble Opinion.
