What is art today?

Digital prints -v- Oil on Canvas, where is art going today, is it just expression of onself or a beauty created which can be admired for centuries for its details and asthetics, or a quick buck maker creation of which numerous additons can be taken and anyone can do it.....

i don't think it is a question of one versus the other. there is room for both and time will be the final judge of what has outlasted.

Digital prints, oil on canvas and everything in between. I don't think it matters, if the image has passion and moves viewers it will last and become a classic. Granted traditional forms of art are more easily excepted, but I think the internet opens new doors and brings new viewers. All one can do is create and share the rest is up to the sands of time.

In this late post-modern age art is often created out of the technology and modern mediums available. And to be honest a lot of high profile new 'art' out there is weak, pretentious and amateurish.

Maybe some digital art has something to say. But art these days is either derivitive of past art or deconstructing ideas and history of art.

I believe that good meaningful art is being created quietly, out of the eye of the media and spot light. All powerful art finds a way to resonate and affect the world. It will all come to the surface in the future and all the crap will be swept away.

IMHO..a lot of art today is contrived. It has no soul. Just a lot of technological wonder that is surface matter. Yes, it is art for the sake of claiming art as a form of expression, creation, or thought, but I guess that is why we still have categories, such as fine art, illustration, digital, or drawing. Most living and lasting art has a certain feel, a certain emotion, and a spirit. I displays human ingenuity and craftmanship of the hands. So, there is art that provokes the primal and superficial aspects of man, then there is art that envokes the pinnacle and supernatual aspects of man. So, for example, digital art feel mechanic, because it is produced from a machine...an oil painting feel warm, because its from earth material with the touch of human hands...
