18,000 B.C. - sketch

Hello all,

Well, I'm moving on from Mac-n-Cheese and have been fascinated by the recent discovery of the "Hobbit" species...Homo Floresiensis, in Indonesia. They were actually Homo Erectus that got isolated on a tropical island with many fantastical creatures and evolved into tiny humans (because of the lack of food). Supposedly they lived until about 12,000 years ago and interacted with modern humans. I'm not going to get into all of it, but here is a sketch for my next oil painting.

Before I start painting, does this work? I want it to be all "tropically" with the 2 species interacting somehow.

Thanks!

WoW, I must have missed the articles about these little people and will have to read up on them. Im rather a Paleo nut and have found artifacts in my area dating to 20,000 to 12,000 years old left by nomadic Mastadon hunters. I dont see any reason this couldnt be true the same thing happening on Santa Rosa Island off the coast of California where a species of Mastadon got traped on the Island and became small. Slowly we are begining to find out that America wasnt populated by just one culture but by several cultures of people. The design looks great Joe, would like to see the finished image when you get it done.....

Joe, that's going to be a great piece of work! I love the species of plants, there, too. True to life work. Please be sure to post it in progress! I love archeo/paleo subjects, right Dibbs? (we IM about it alot)

I just got a commission to do a piece for a member of the Nebraska Archeology Society for their educational event this year...I'm doing a painting of Clovis culture hunters (one with an atlatl)and a mammoth rearing it's big furry head at them, stirring up dust. I've got a digital "sketch" done, and as soon as the client okays it, I'll post it.

Peter Brown is a bit of a hero of mine here in australia and there has been a lot of controversy about the way the remains were handled. The anthropological dig was a co-operative effort between australia and indonesia if i remember rightly - but Peter brown was one of the main players and i know he works at the University Of New England In N.S.W - check out this link:

It may lead you to some interesting ideas for this project - great subject Joe Mandible cool find - bit of a treasure hunter eh? It is an amazing feeling . . . Your ideas and plan are pretty amazing Joe keep us all informed . . . sounds exciting

PS Your Komodo dragon seems a little small - they are pretty big you know . . . check out the link above or contact the abc here in australia they may have some visuals thay may be useful in this work

Thanks, I'm pretty excited about it!

The locals on the island explain them in almost exact detail, saying that they lived up to about a hundred years ago...or even possibly, still exist.

Thanks Mandible, Lucas, John, Wendy, and Dawn.

John: This is just a painting I decided to do after learning about the Homo Floresiensis.

Wendy: The Komodo is supposed to be down towards the Terror Bird so it would appear smaller, but I will keep that in mind as I move forward and work with the perspective. Those Komodo's must have looked like Dinosaurs to the hobbits...

I got to thinking and maybe this is where the legands of dragons came from, the Komodo surely would have been considered a dragon by such a small race. Native American legands from my area tell of a small race of people they called the owleyes, they were supposedly little white guys with big eyes that lived in the ground....

Looks awesome! The terror bird looks like a chocobo from final fantasy. Can't wait to see the painting someday. Nice work...

mr. joe bartz ! VERY nice start ! i really like this composition, its already looking awesome - hurry and get it done so we can see it ! awesome!

Thanks Andrew and Hinsel!

I just sat down, popped in the Lord of the Rings Triology, and started painting.

Let's see how Frodo and Sam deal with Komodo's and freakin' Terror Birds...
