If you’re interested in seeing what a ballpoint pen can do as an art medium my site has 3,541 ballpoint pen drawings produced by 221 worldwide artists. I also has 87 ballpoint pen drawings video’s and 69 photographs of different pens or refills. Addressed to Peter Williams or others interested in this medium!

WESTERN ARTWORK By Denny Karchner 03 Jul 2009

Here is some of my "ballpoint pen art" from 2005. I thought you would never ask. Pretty good, huh Jerr?

WESTERN ARTWORK By Denny Karchner 03 Jul 2009

I am sorry. I forgot that I had it framed a while back. ;{

Minnie Shuler 03 Jul 2009

Gosh, Denny, that's a refreshing dip into nostalgia. I don't even know what those ink masterpieces (currency) and metal sculptors (coins) look like anymore....it's all electronic and plastic. I love your work...post all you want. Since Jerry is planning to post an essay of 9 different mediums, why not put up some of each one he writes about. We do need examples, we might not know what he's talking about.

WESTERN ARTWORK By Denny Karchner 03 Jul 2009

Why Minnie, so glad to see you drop by. What a refreshing breath of fresh air! It was getting real stuffy in here.

Thanks for your kind words on my art. I will most gladly post more work to explain what "Brother Stith" is talking about.

Do have a nice evening, my Dear! ;{

I confirm what Jerry Said about the highlight with ballpoint pen. It's the same work than colored pencil. We start from the lighter color and finish with the darker.

That way, you can keep all the light zone and create with the white of your board the shine spot ! It's not about what you can't do with ballpoint pen, it's about how you gonna do it with it !

Personally, I think I can draw anything with ballpoint pen. I try to challenge myself to see if I have limit with it but, it always turn OK !

Allan Barbeau 04 Jul 2009

Ho ! And thanks Denny for the link of Shohei Otomo !! Great Ballpoint pen Artist !!

By the way ! can you guys argue during night time ? This way, it will be day time for me and I will be able to give my point of view in time !! (only joking;-)

Jerry 04 Jul 2009

Allan, I love doing impressions of people with dark rich colors!

Jerry 04 Jul 2009

Allan, here’s another dark rich colored portrait. I love the power of color in an open picture.

Allan Barbeau 04 Jul 2009

I Just finish to draw a little something to show you about light with ballpoint pen !! Imagine the result with a big format ! (this one is only 15 x 15 cm )

jim rownd 04 Jul 2009

I understand how a ballpoint pen works. As a tool for rendering, pencils and pens are one of the first things we all start out with as children. Thats why I know it's easy to maintain the white of the board in small and large tone areas. But when it comes to doing things like hair and textures like bristle (unless you doing a really big piece of art and a lot of planning)well...

I just don't see it in any of the samples posted here. Some of you reading this may say.... damn dude why so picky about the hair thing?

I 'm looking at work here where the artist has spent the time to do the detail of the eyes iris but is not giving the same respect to the hair. That is because of the limitations of the tool not the artist.

Speaking of eyes. Jerry in your last post the eyes are off. In the one above not so much. well other then the right eye looks like it's about to pop out. you do say your work is your impressions so I guess it's not a big deal.

peace and have a happy 4th

jim rownd 04 Jul 2009

oops!!

forgot to post some of my art in keeping with the flavor of this thread. jerry I know it's not ballpoint pen. please forgive me.

also here's kind of a brief statement on how I did it.

"brief" I know this also is not the flavor of this thread. again please forgive me.

fyi the things on the upper right( bag and sockets) in the illustration are a photo I retouched but everything else I did from scratch with some help from ref.

Minnie Shuler 04 Jul 2009

This is such a cool piece, jim. I have felt just like this. You have really captured the moment. If fine art is rated by the emotion it generates then this one is timeless. There are few emotions runing higher right now then our interaction with health care. Really speaks for our time period. No matter which medium you are using, some peices just strike a place near the heart whether it's by humor, nostalgia, or the raw color, line and composition and carries a sense of beauty within that is appreciated by the viewer. You have reached your audience here. Drawing from life, a must do challenge. Copying a photograph exactly, an exercise in technique, but still of some virtue. Drawing from imagination alone or with just a little reference...a pure talent. Drawing with the vision of tomorrow like Leonardo or as a light to the past...a gift.

Allan Barbeau 04 Jul 2009

"But when it comes to doing things like hair and textures like bristle (unless you doing a really big piece of art and a lot of planning)well..."

This one is only A4 size and I find it not so bad !

jim rownd 04 Jul 2009

thanks Minnie!

Allan it is a very nice piece.

but it does prove my point.

the detail you put in the eyes and the busyness of the tigers fur pattern draw all the attention away from the fact that there is no sense light directing and use of highlights on the fur.

Allan Barbeau 04 Jul 2009

Challenge me my good man :) Show me a nice photo with shiny hair and I'll proove that it's possible !

;)

Jerry 04 Jul 2009

Allan Barbeau and Jerry Stith are two of the top ballpoint pen artists on the WWW which now has over a billion registered users. We're International leaders because we work hard, stay focused, positive and are helpful to others.

Our sites, blogs, forum, video’s, slideshows, artworks, essays and programs are archived, documented, recorded and published as Ballpoint Pen Art history. That means we have international, national, state or local world records and achievements most others simply don’t have. I’m going to Allan’s ballpoint pen art forum because he’s a friend plus doesn’t have negative people attacking our medium or his statements. I’ll take my forty-two years as a ballpoint pen art experience, knowledge, skills and abilities with me. We’ll combined our talents and knowledge in order to make that place a worldwide ballpoint pen art reference or center just like my old MSN sites.

We’re introducing the largest undeveloped art movement in history or simply add to the Pen and Ink art movement that has been around for the past four thousand years. Our job in life is not based on pleasing you, meeting your requirements, standards, likes or dislikes. Attacking us personally, our art medium, thoughts or teachings aren’t a reflection on us because at the end of the day, we’re still producing art history and world leaders. Allan and I are both blessed and highly favored because we've been choosen to lead and record ballpoint pen art history. We’re going to use those skills to produce an undeveloped art movement instead of attacking others!

I could attack any of you people or your art mediums all day long if wasting my time was of interest. Posting other art mediums, peoples works, negative statements or personal attacks simply reflects an individuals character. Allan and I are simply displaying our art, thoughts or views pertaining to what a ballpoint pen can do as an art medium. That means we’re taking a stance for something not against something! Anyone can say, no or go negative from my observations. Solutions, progress, advancements or achievements are based on co-operation or positive impute.

Allan’s drawings are exquisite, eloquent, superb, spectacular or beautiful yet they’re being degraded because they don’t satisfy others personal likes. Several of you people certainly don’t please me! Apparently attacking or offending us is A-ok, yet we’re support to please you. Allan and I both have sites that are designed for helping others. We’ve spent decades teaching, instructing or educating others about art and those people loved us for it. Therefore, we recognize negative energy or situations. Our people and art students come to us because they love us while you arrive to attack.

Allan and I work in the public therefore we’re use to having thousands of people praising us or our artworks. That’s why we continue to help others, display our artworks and keep on, keeping on. We’re not going to stop using a ballpoint pen as an art medium, telling others about our experiences, specking out or living and loving life. We’re going to enjoy art, love our wives and families plus produce a better environment for those around us, amen.

I now have 7,645 fantastic comments on my ballpoint pen artworks at this wonderful forum. I also have over a half million visits or hits therefore a few of you going negative means very little. I suggest that you get a life, become positive, edify others and focus on people using the same art medium instead of condemning those doing pen and ink……

Have a blessed day,

Mr. Stith

It seems that Allen has no problem with us. You Mr. Stith are the one who thumbs his nose at us. You say you have all these loyal followers in your flock, where are they? Real supportive of them, I would say. Every since I met you, you have done nothing but brag on yourself and try to hog all bandwidth you possibly can. As I put "ballpoint pen artist" in a Google search, I would think that the "King of the Ballpoint Pen" would surely be on page one. You are nowhere to be found.

I refused to be talked down to like a dog. That is real "Christian-like" of you. I hope your pastor, followers and friends see you for the self-righteous person you really are. The only reason for all the hits on this post is to see what controversies you will bring. True to your history, you haven't changed one bit. If you leave again, don't let the proverbial door hit you in the butt.

Very sincerely, Denny

BTW, carry on Allen! I love your work no matter what Mr. Stith says. Sorry you missed the "back and forth." ;{

Allan Barbeau 04 Jul 2009

I understand my friend Jerry. Like me, he have a big passion for ballpoint pen art. He is maybe a bit extreme when he's talking about it but I know that it's hes love for this art who's talking.

That say, I personally don't feel myself attacked what so ever by anybody in here. After all, we are here to talk about ballpoint pen and it's limit as a medium. So it's normal to try to compare it with other medium.

Minnie Shuler 04 Jul 2009

Grandma Sims used to have a saying, Jerry. ' A hit dog hollers.' Perhaps you should think of that, Jerry, and why you have such a paranoid reaction to people who have different views about art than you do. Saying something longer and louder doesn't make it truer or better. Wasn't it your Christian leader, Jesus, who said "A soft answer truneth away wrath." If you have to restate your credentials as an artist over and over something may be a little off. Let your art speak for itself and stop putting others down by lifting your ownself up. You keep pointing your finger at negative people attacking you. I see only people who have a different opinion. We are guarenteed that freedom you know. My mother always told me that if you were pointing your finger at someone else there were four fingers pointing back at yourself. Why are you doing that? If you have such a need to give your resume then apply for a job somewhere and submit it. You see, the thing about art is that whether it is 'the best' is left to the viewer not the creator. Your credentials are your not finished piece. It doesn't matter how much or how little art you have done in the past, it's that blank paper in front of you and what you do with it. Have you retired as an artist? I challenge you to post only new art not seen on any of your sites without any words at all, without any computer gimmicks. Your talent and years of experience will show through.
