"I however do not, nor do I like or allow anyone to call me an artist."

Pete is an artist! Pete is an artist! an artist and artist.......an artist......

Minnie Shuler 27 Dec 2011

Pete..I was being completely sarcastic. Some people are of the opinion that everone is an artist and blatently stick a paint brush in every child's hand expecting a masterpiece. I think more of art than that. I am not of the opinion that simply because someone produces some marks on paper or other object it makes them an artist and we should perhaps quit using the term so lightly. I do think each has his or her own talents but not necessarily in art. If you do not wish to be considered an artist..fine. Perhaps you would kindly explain why you have such disdain for the word, other than as you said and I agree it's utter over use. Perhaps even the term craftsman carries more weight now than artist. Pity.

OK sure...Here goes. I participate in several shows throughout the warmer months and I meet literally hundreds of people ..I meet craftsman of all kinds the people who are the most pompous or arrogant at the shows are the ones who call themselves artists, now dont get me wrong I know a lot of "artists that are fantastic people... but in my area when you walk into a show and you hear the whispers," Oh Geez...another "artist"" because the attitude that often accompanies "the true artist" You may call yourself what ever you like..to be called an artist in some culture is a label of distinction, but to me being an artist also must be accompanied by humility as well. Thank you Minnie...

in a manner, I agree with Pete. I think one is called by others "artist" otherwise it has no real meaning. art has been so diluted by the many art-isms that it has became a means of division......

minnie, you are so brave to type all that! i used to be afraid to even say i was a professional artist, when everyone is so ready to question you, fight with you and then critique your work! as a professional in any other field, i went to college for 5 years, earned two degrees, have worked full time in the field of art for over 40 years and have paid my bills the entire time. i hope someday to be a real artist! lol happy new year!

Creating art is an activity that rises above normal mundane or common activity in the day. It is the best of one's self.
