Budget is a dirty word I know, art and economics never mix.
Art Directors and Desktop publishers are just doing thier job, if they produce real art it is probably in thier own time, as I did.
I've absolutely have no regrets about leaving all of that behind me. Having those jobs and being depressed by thier limitations, is probably the main reason why I have run completely in the opposite direction to oil paint.
oh ric... i would not have thought you to be so traditional..
Nice to see you type though...and express your opinions... : )
Actually ric, i've very much mellowed out in the last few months... i used to bite off heads quite often (when justified, of course.. : )
I can see how some people (especially those who have not tried it and might not be familiar with how a digital piece is put together) might think it is not much work. They might think the computer program does the work. But that is really not how it is. There are some ways to cheat (brushes, filters, ect) but you never get the beautiful amazing pieces by those methods!
And Seth made a good point. The artist's imagination, the composition of the piece is partly what makes good art what it is.
If I draw the face of a tiger, scan it and then use my computer to manipulate it into a better picture this is considered digital painting or creation just the same as if I used the mouse to draw the picture. I have spent a great number of hours doing this type of work. The original creation and thought process was of my own and the wide spread assumption that all digital is a simple process of photo manipulation is the part I have to get past. I must allow the opinion for lack of their knowledge. Just as they must consider my lack of knowledge in regards to other media. I cannot criticize what I do not know about, yet it happens all the time in digital. It's a mere obstacle only I have created and I can choose to let it bother me or move on and keep enjoying what I do. I choose to move on and enjoy all art regardless of media, because art is art....it's that simple, creation of the imagination is what art is no matter how we do it.
Im glad your going to give digital a shot Michelle because it's both fun and creative. It's a learning process to help you better your skills in other areas of your art. Alot of good things have been said in this thread and even though I feel digital is at the lower end of the media scale I am quite confident that it's pace towards the top will continue rapidly and be considered a valuable tool to all artist.
Thats a direct quote from a comment on Thelma Stanfords work and a perfect example of unnecessary digital trashing. I see these kinds of comments all the time and they are really quite uncalled for. I try so hard not to let it bother me....
How would the person working with paint feel If I said....
I normally don't rate peoples oil work because usually all anyone does is throw some paint together slap it on a canvas and call it art.
Personal opinion is everywhere, but common courtesy and a little social tact seems to be a thing of the past. A little consideration when commenting is not to much to ask for I dont think. Discussing these issues on a board is where we hear the true opinions, but the fact is I have yet to hear the reasons for this type of attitude towards digital in this thread. I guess I just found the answer and reasoning I was looking for.
Have a good day everyone.
i saw that comment today, i believe on a beautiful very red filagreed fractal... And i thought to myself... 'self...if the idiot doesnt comment on digital art beacause he may not like it, WHY THE FUDGE IS HE SOUNDING LIKE A BOOB AND RATING IT ???'...whew... that felt good.. : )
