I think you should try the basic photography first before you try expanding.

If you want to try and do digital manipulations I would suggest taking pictures of shapes. Like, barren branches, grasses, and clouds for an example.

People and animals are a hard subject to manipulate digitally when you first start dabbling with the process.

Keep on trying, practice, practice, practice.
