Self Portrait

My childhood was spent in a small town called Dehradun, which lies in North India nestled in a valley in the foot hills of the Mighty Himalaya's.

When I was in school, Dehradun was a quiet place and was often mocked for being a place where you could find only “hedges and old people”. I started painting from a very young age with the ambition to become an accomplished artist one day. My parents were a great support and a huge source of encouragement. With their backing at every step throughout my school days I never hesitated to take part in painting competitions. New techniques and confidence is what I achieved if not the prizes but slowly and gradually I started winning most of them. Being greatly involved and attached to my work as an artist, I managed to be an average student. My goals were clear, no two ways about it. For me it was never a doubtful ambition because art was all I wanted to do was follow in the steps of Masters.

I continued to paint and I have exhibited my works in a number of group and solo exhibitions. I feel that my work is based on events, people, places etc. in short everything around me which affects me positively helps me in guiding my brush on the canvas. All my work is very personal to me as it is an extension of my mind and body it provides me with a mirror in which I can see my soul’s reflection. I don’t give titles to most of my work as I want the eyes of the beholder to depict them in their own manner without me leading them into a narrow channel. I don’t like to restrict myself to a particular medium so my paintings are a mixture of different elements, forms and textures. I am completely nocturnal, if there is an image in my mind and I can see the colours in it I feel the need to get it out as soon as possible and mostly it happens when I am about to sleep this leads me to paint throughout the night. I follow my intuition on every stroke and every colour, with reminisces of my dreams guiding me. When I close my eyes images and forms come out to play almost like dreaming and painting at the same time. My Love for vibrant colours and warped perspective on life is what drives me to bring to life what I feel and see in my mind, my work is an extension of my dream world into the real world.

“The world today doesn’t make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?” Pablo Picasso.
