ARTISTS STATEMENT
“The interpretation of the self is fashioned from the perspective of others and is, therefore, consistently in need of correction. Art corrects the ambiguities of misrepresentation.” -jasminrivera-06072012
LATINO POP ART
Latino Pop Art was created and first coined by Rivera in 2005. In much the same fashion that British and American Pop Art provided a venue for out-of-the-box artists in search of relief from their bourgeois counter parts, Latino Pop Art utilizes popular culture from the Americas and the Caribbean to translate the experiences of the diaspora- defining and re-defining identity, culture, opportunity and exclusion.
ARTISTS BIO
Rivera received her Bachelor of Arts in Latino Studies in October 2008 from the School of General Studies at Columbia University and a Masters degree in foreign policy with a concentration in human rights from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in May 2012.
A Professor of Caribbean History and Culture, Rivera’s scholarship and artistic perspectives are intertwined, conveying the multiple experiences of the Caribbean diaspora in New York and beyond.
