The Scammell “eight wheeler” tractor and trailer combination was always an impressive sight and was usually seen in tanker form with a relatively short wheelbase, so the United Dairies’ box-van with its longer trailer and loud livery was doubley impressive to eyes used to smaller vehicles. Scammell drivers were a race apart in those days as they sat high behind a huge steering wheel in a spacious cab with its notoriously unforgiving gearbox incorporating a difficult gate change.
