The upper photo shows the new Place of the Popes which was restored in 1933. For nearly 100 years, Avignon was the papal center and the capital of Christiandom. Seven Popes lived in Avignon between 1305 and 1378. The Papal Palace was both lavish and well fortified. The lower photo shows the Papal Palace from the inner courtyard.
