DETERMINED DUCKS

Acrylic on canvas,20" x 40" Three ducks swimming in canal, very seriously as if intent on getting someplace. Interestingly, 2 males and 1 female between the males. Also, there was a beautiful reflection in the canal, but their wake was eradicating it, as if that was their intentention. Such interesting and fun scenes are so frequent in The Netherlands, if you have time just to walk or bike around keeping an eye out. Best of all for me was the beautiful reigers -- much like USA blue herons. My appreciation to Marcy Ayanian, California, who now owns this painting!

SPECTACULAR WORK!1

Tourists always see the wooden shoes, tulips and mills, but this is the real view on Holland. Ducks in water, always busy and yes whatever they're doing they do it seriously, always paddling in the third gear :). It's a lovely painting, especially with the V in it, Mrs. Marcy will sure enjoy it very much!

Artist Reply: Dear Anneke, Thanks again for your lovely comment, Anneke. I took some photos which contributed to this painting. I was just walking along that canal by Suez Kada admiring the reflection of the buildings in the water, and I saw these three ducks swimming toward the sea. Their wake was destroying the reflection of the buildings along my side of the canal, and their journey seemed so purposeful that it seemed as if maybe they had a job to “wipe out” that reflection. Anyway, I ran a long ways along the canal with them trying to keep up and pause to take photos and avoid running into a tree or something and/or ending up in the canal myself. It was funny, because a lot of the photos were of sky or ground in my helter-skelter rush, and I looked around once and saw some people wondering if maybe I was a bit loco! Anyway, I chased them from east of the Groot Hertoginnelaan as far as the Kennedy Blvd. There I couldn’t cross the traffic in time and I never caught up with them. So I didn’t find out their destination. As I wrote somewhere else, I thought it interesting that two male ducks seemed to be escorting the single female. About the picture's owner, Marcy lived about 10 years in The Hague, was my wife's secretary for a couple years. Since about 1999 she has lived in LA California, working as a Legal secretary and writing historical fiction. Her wonderful 21-year-old cat, Jimmy, died and is buried (quietly) in the Netherlands, and her new, Orange cat she named William after William of Orange! This was one of her favorites of my paintings at that time. Peace, etc., Bruce
