This Smallmouth salamander is unusual due to the silver flecks that looks like paint thrown from an illustrators brush onto the salamander's grey to black skin color. This 6" specimen lives mostly under ground as it eats earthworms and soft bodied insects. It is very rarely seen except after torrential rains which may have flooded it's burrow. This animal appeared after flooding at my studio and represents the second recorded for this species in Platte county, Missouri. The first recorded was found by me a few yards away from where I found this one but a few years apart.
