Sunset and Granite

This image was captured with my compact digital camera in the Chuo Alps of Japan in October. Between these boulders of granite you can see Ontakesan, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains.

very strong composition, beautifully captured. What would we do without our digital compacts eh ?

Artist Reply: You know, Mike, I am learning more and more who handy that little compact comes in. There are times when I want to grab a shot and can't set up the tripod the right way or reach far enough in with the 35mm. My compact can be stretched in somewhere tight and I can check the composition on the viewfinder and grab the shot. And sometimes, as in this case, I take the time with the film camera and blow the exposure. The compact shot is all I have to show for it in the end. Thanks for your comment.

Not only have you caught the sunlight at a perfect moment, but you were careful to retain excellent shadow detail. The texture (and strength) of the stone is thus preserved for the viewer. Very nicely done.

Artist Reply: Thank you very much, Mike. As it goes sometimes, my digital compact did a nice of capturing the scene with the correct exposure but I underexposed the film. This is the only good photograph I have of this moment.

Oh this is striking! Big and bold and beautiful!

Artist Reply: I needed another two hours to get to the shelter for the night but when I stopped here for a break I realized the potential for a good photograph at sunset. As a result I never made it to the shelter and spent the night in my sleeping bag under the stars on a nearby mountain top along the same ridge.

Great shot Peter!

Artist Reply: Thank you, Michael. It was one of the better ones from that trip.
