Uncle

Charley Duarte bought property in Iao Valley (about a mile from the Iao Needle behind him here), and became Uncle after marrying my Auntie Lorraine Ikehara. Returning to Maui after WWII, he became Mr. Construction. He was skilled and crazy enough to cut into the steep coast hills with a bulldozer which allowed conventional equipment to complete today's coast road to Lahaina. While slicing aku for luau sashimi, he once told me that better tasting sashimi comes from fish with white parasites like those on the cutting board in front of us. The illustration is Photoshop editing from the card sent by my Maui family. It read "In loving memory of Charles G Duarte Jan 10,1924 - Nov 11,2008" ..My uncle, what a guy.
