Pink Storm

This picture was taken last summer in Fort Walton Beach, FL. There was a light seabreeze mixing up a small storm off shore in the Gulf of Mexico. To determine exposure, I took an incident light reading using a Gossen Starlite meter. I was shooting on Fuji Velvia film along with an FD-L filter. So, to correct for reciprocy, I opened my lens an extra stop. During the exposure, I used a high powered flash light to crisp up the darker areas in the frame. This photo is on positive slide film, and there was no digital manipulation involved. It took about 30 exposures before a lightening bolt finally flashed in the middle of the scene. Everyone at the hotel thought I was a little crazy running around with a flash light trying not to spill my margarita. I think I made the security a little nervous too.

I really like this photo. To me, it's a visual metaphor for childhood's end, or coming of age. The brightly colored playground is contrasted to the intrusion of the storm and lightning. It suggests how an awareness of reality interrupts the blissful innocence of youth. I guess this image really appeals to the psychologist in me! :)
