As is with eagles and many other sea birds, the Blue Heron has secondary translucent eyelids which are used when fishing, flying, and receiving attacks from other birds. This is called the nicitating membrane, which closes every 3 to 5 seconds wetting the cornea and clearing dust. It is also used when feeding their young so as not to get their eyes pecked out by sharp, hungry young beaks. This is the first time I've managed to capture them as a heron was diving in their lightning fast way of striking for minnows and other prey. Pentax K100D
