MAKE EACH DAY YOUR MASTERPIECE

"Who in the world is John Wooden?" is what I told myself when first asked to paint an honorary mural for this man and his family. "Sports" has never been my focal point, neither has keeping up with college championships, University rivalries and coaches, but as I began the lengthy process of research, data collections, sketches, renderings and interviews in preparation for this artwork... I realized that this man is a legend and somehow has changed the world. Dino Quintanilla gave me a basic introduction to his pyramid of success, when I first acquired his marker signature. Minister Alex Reyes explained his history, prior to reading several of his books. Coach Wooden's very own daughter, Nan, came to see me personally and to pose for specific features in her father, as well as to reconfirm precise historical design information and accuracy in her mothers airbrushed details. (This mural is 15 ft. X 25 ft.) I worked with students and the Arternatives team. Brother Bewley kept a keen watchful servicing eye at the progress, Jay Kessler directed the overview process, Hristina accounted for all monetary transactions and supplies needed. Various at-risk teenagers assisted. My precious Paloma and Elias were present at the ceremony when all the media, Mid-city council members, and LAUSD school representatives appeared. Coach Wooden smiled continuously, hugged us and kissed my cheek* I sense I know him very well now, and pray for my new friend often......................... MPC - HR S46 2008
