Edward Jenner (1740-1823) was an English country doctor who observed that cow maids did not contract smallpox. He discovered that by inoculating with coxpox, he could prevent the much more serious disease of smallpox. Although he did not understand the viral nature of the disease, his technique, which he named vaccination (from the Latin word, vacca for cow), became the standard preventive treatment.
