About once or twice a week I have this visitor in my tree. He works his way up and down the branches searching for the spot with bugs, then he beats his beak against the trunk until he can reach the tiny delectibles inside. He is a Downy Woodpecker, he can be identified by the banding on the tail feathers. The hairy woodpecker has no markings on the tail. Taken in Mission, B.C.

very nice image of the woodpecker Pam, I see your learning the subtle differences of similar looking birds.. not always easy ,is it..LOLL I know I have trouble from time to time, especially when the only difference might be one band on the tail versus two bands...then you got your winter coats, summer coats , juvenile/adult coats..it is enought to drive one batty...Have a Great weekend
