Light My Fire

Graffiti on trees present viewers with a wide array of imagery. The imagery on this tree is a collective form of art that offers visual etchings of people, animals, characters and more. The central image of this tree looks like a profile of a cartoon-like character who has “blown his stack” as revealed by his hat detached from his head. The texture and details are a collective form of art from anonomous people who enjoy tagging their visual messages. Although I see many images within the body of the main figure and outside his frame. Can you see a woman's face with a tear in her left eye under the head of the main character? I took the photograph based on the image of this amusing character. Often when I see graphics and other art forms, I associate to music, our universal language and the poetic lyrics conveyed in the songs. When I saw the flame at the end of this characters outstretched arm, I thought of the legendary Jim Morrison, an inspirational and brilliant musician who tragically died young from a heart attack after years of abusing drugs. Drugs are reflected in his classic song, “Light My Fire” that became the signature song of his group released on their first album that launched them to stardom. Morrison was the lead singer and his songs were often played in the background of the cultural revolution in the 60’s when I was an undergraduate in college. His powerful music and vocals were rock classics that have been enjoyed by many generations after his tragic death. Most of the lyrics were written by Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger. He wanted to write about one of the elements: fire, air, earth, and water. Before this song was released, The Doors were an underground band popular in Los Angeles. This song got the attention of a mass audience. Jim Morrison studied film and poetry at the University of California where I was fortunate to attend his concerts on campus as an undergraduate student. You know that it would be untrue You know that I would be a liar If I was to say to you Girl, we couldn’t get much higher Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire The time to hesitate is through No time to wallow in the mire Try now we can only lose And our love become a funeral pyre Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire, yeah The time to hesitate is through No time to wallow in the mire Try now we can only lose And our love become a funeral pyre Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire, yeah You know that it would be untrue You know that I would be a liar If I was to say to you Girl, we couldn’t get much higher Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire Try to set the night on fire Try to set the night on fire Try to set the night on fire
