He wanted to write about one of the elements: fire, air, earth, and water. Before this song was released, The Doors were an underground band popular in Los Angeles. This song got the attention of a mass audience. Jim Morrison studied film and poetry at the University of California where I was fortunate to attend his concerts on campus as an undergraduate student.
