THE PROCESS OF A PORTRAIT

I am not hired to simply trace an image from a projector. The majority of times, people are asking for my personal "eyesight" and interpretation of their loved one, departed or living. Unless they specifically state that they want an exact photographic reproduction, I love to sketch the person freehandedly. 1) I begin by splashing some form of color unto a blank white canvas to offset the surface and give way to a better approach. 2) The sketch phase is started by distancing the photo to the same level as the rendering, for the capturing of main weight and balance of the compositional elements within the figure. 3) The principal acrylic paint tones are laid in without much thought to any form of detail in the work. (The idea is to be accurate in the procedure of general color placements) 4) I hone in on facial features, design accuracy and distinct characteristics which make that person who they are. (Even if painting twins or identical triplets, it is important to spend a little extra time talking to them personally, or perhaps investigating their likes and dislikes, in order to properly portray and distinguish their unique qualities) 5) I work the painting until it is ready for smoother brushed blends and possible airbrush gradations. 6) I highlight the eyes, lips, and hair, as well as darken the obscure tonal values. 7) I recheck and correct all unwanted discrepancies and add possible color punches or background effects. 8) I sign the artwork. [Many times a customer wants the piece treated with a protective / UV clearcoat, this would then be the final step] HR - Arternatives / John Grubbs (precious mother) portrait [18" X 24"] 2007
