Brigid's Loom

This piece sold on the first evening of a gallery exhibition in a nearby community!

In honor of the many tales of the goddess and Christian saint, this weaving celebrates the female spirit.

The exploration of the past through common mediums of weaving and collage embody for me the interrelationship of many cross-cultural beliefs and traditions into a unified coherent artistic expression.

I envisioned the wire warp as the synthesis of belief in the goddess Brigit or Brighid of the Old Irish, Bride or Brighde of the Scots, Ffraid of the Welsh, Brigantia of the Brits, etc., a Faery Queen, which later merged with the Roman Catholic saint. This juxtaposition of the Old Goddess and the Saint reflect deep interest in the land of my fathers people.

The weft of ribbon, fiber, embellished paper and fabric mirror the colors of precious gems, stones, and metals placed in altars and shrines. Artist-made foam-core frame, coated with molding paste and inscribed for texture and then painted with acrylics and embellished with beads surround the weaving.

First in the Goddess series. 8" x 10" with stand. Available for purchase from Artist through PayPal. Copyright AlteredIllusions (tm)
