Maserati 8CTF

Number 3032 was one of three 8CTFs built by Maserati in 1938. Union leader and Chicago gangster Michael "Umbrella Mike" Boyle sponsored the car as the Boyle Special to run in the Indianapolis 500 with Wilbur Shaw as driver. Shaw and 3032 won the race in 1939 and 1940 becoming the event's first back to back winner. Shaw was leading the race again in 1941 when one of the car's wire wheels collapsed. Racing at Indy was suspended during the Second World War but in 1946 3032 was back with Ted Horn at the wheel to finish 3rd. It finished third again in 1947 and in 1948 it finished in 4th place. Over a decade old the car might have gotten yet another top five finish in 1949 had it not developed an oil leak.
