This terrestrial orchid, also known as the Soldier Orchid, is very common in continental Europe but only found on two small reserves in England. One of these sites is at Mildenhall, very close to where I live, and my father was the warden here for many years. If you look closely at the individual florets you can see how the orchid gets its name as they resemble an 18th Century soldier in uniform with a tin helmet and buttoned jacket.
