Macha Mong Ruad

This is a contest entry to Deviant art's 'Elite Equine Artists' first competition, found here http://elite-equine-artists.deviantart.com/journal/9104478/ I have only lived in Australia for 3 years, so I thought it innapropiate to do a piece based around Australian horse culture.... so I went to my roots. Ireland is very well known as a horse society. A dominate force in the breeding world (its our green, green grass =p ) Ireland has churned out many great racers and sport horses alike. Horses play such a great role in our history! It was believed that horses carried the souls of the fallen to the next realm on their backs, they could talk... when they wanted to... and where involved in many, many tales and legends. The goddess most closely associated with horses in Irish culture is Macha Mong Ruad (Macha red mane) as well as war and kinglyness. Coloured pencils on A4, 290 gsm, super smooth paper.. and more elbow grease that I could ever hope to sacrifice ;)

Artist Reply: Thanks Susan, I think the coloured pencils really help create that 'soft' look and I love how it turned out :D
